A Green Solution for City Self Sufficiency

Set in the distant future, this large-scale urban farming concept called Greenbelt aims to provide cities with a way to utilize their own resourcefulness rather than depend on costly imported goods. The Greenbelt actually surrounds the city, using vertical, space-saving structures to support aquapronics (fish farming combined with soil free growing). Water is led to a hydroponic system where by-products from the fish are filtered out by plants as vital nutrients. Cleansed water is then recirculated back to the fish and the process continues.

Dehumidifier Planter Pyramid

All it takes is a quick image search to find out just how UGLY dehumidifiers are. For whatever reason, they’re just one of those objects that haven’t gotten around to being aesthetically in check. This concept aims to make the device less offensive by redesigning the shape into a unique pyramid shape that not only collects water, but distributes it to the soil in an integrated planter. It’s a nice looking, modern and multifunctional alternative to those outdated designs.

The very top cutout on the peak of the pyramid is for atmospheric air intake, the humid air is condensed and the perfectly clean water is digitally distributed to some corresponding plant in the planter, with the remaining water dumped into the excess/reserve drawer container. The cool air then gets blown out back into the room via the horizontal slats on the pyramid body.

The knob is designed to work ergonomically, with an analog feel and progressive power control. The actual knob itself is constructed out of frosted clear thermoplastic, and when the dehumidifier is on and working, a bright green LED will illuminate the knob and matching plastic meter needle. Conversely, when the dehumidifier requires attention, like when the excess/reserve water container is full, the knob will light up bright red.

At the bottom backside of the dehumidifier one will find the bin where all the excess/reserve water goes. In the middle of the drawer is a clear plastic panel so the user can clearly see how full the bin is, and whether or not it needs to be emptied. The dehumidifier will shut off when the reserve drawer is full of water, which will be capable of then slowly siphoning off its contents to the thirsty plant while the user is away or unable to empty the tray. The handle for the drawer is hidden on the middle underside of the pan, where an ergonomic hand indentation acts as a holder to pull out the drawer and aid in its emptying.

Home-Grown Lighting

The latest in a trend of garden & light combinations, the Aura lamp is an experiment in interactive objects that combines nature, water & light in a unique design that strengthens the bond between object & user by changing color with a simple touch of the plant’s leaves. The system uses an aluminum base with LED RGB modules that shine through the glass container. By touching the plant the user grounds the system & activates color changes, power & light intensity.

Disguised Exercise

The downside of exercise becoming a predominately indoor activity is that it has caused us to lose a certain amount of contact with nature. Arceas brings fitness and nature together in this artistic object that at first appears to be little more than an upright planter, but take a closer look and you’ll see that it’s actually an exercise machine! Integrated into the structure are pulley systems for strength training as well as hideaway padded mat for stretching and ab workouts.

Plants Love Your Leftovers

To many, the idea of starting a compost pile seems like a daunting task. Few of us have large enough outdoor areas or the time and patience to manage. The Nepenthes planter provides a smaller, cleaner way of recycling organics and growing your own food. Simply place your leftovers down the hatch and let the bacteria do the rest. Nutrients will be released back into the soil where they can be used by plants. No need to worry about the smell, a built in carbon filter ensures the planter stays smelling fresh.Kinda looks like a carnivorous pitcher plant!

Living with Spiders

Unfortunately, having eight legs, fangs & a face that isn’t very attractive doesn’t usually win spiders any favors. Call me crazy but I love ‘em & to this day have never killed one. In fact, they’re the only thing I am superstitious about. The Co-Habitation planter incorporates a hollow space fit with an LED light that attracts insects to help these little guys to do their job killing. It’s a natural bug zapper, if you will. For gardeners who know that spiders deserve a place, if not in your heart, in your planter.

Lofty Fruit and Plant Storage

So you’ve got some tiny plants and you’ve got a few bananas and orange you need stored somewhere in your kitchen but you just cant find the space, right? Check this design out. It’s called Cocoon and it’s made for kitchen storage. It’s made to be a storage unit that combines decoration, storage, and cultivation for the kitchen and the kitchen window. It’s got an organic shape so the plants will love you, and it’s got an alcove for all your round and banana-shaped belongings.

In this container you can store spices and fruits, allowing you both color and life in the kitchen without taking up space on your tiny counters. Cocoon is made of a clay that’s able to absorb water from cultivation, and when it evaporates, the storage is cooled. Sounds like a total package!

Walnut and Grass

Designer Emily Wettstein uses reclaimed walnut and steel to craft this beautifully organic table. Love the rusted out legs juxtaposed by the lush planter. Not really my aesthetic but I appreciate the boldness. If I had one, I’d plant catnip and raise an army of cats.
