Millions of traditional telephones are still being made everyday but their form hasn’t changed much. Designer Chengyuan Wei took one apart and discovered the components have all been quite miniaturized so she conceived the Origami Phone. When you pick it up to answer and dial out, it changes from a flat surface to a tridimensional object suited to the hand. Minimal and efficient. LOVE IT!

The Japanese art of Origami has been embraced wholeheartedly by the design continuum as we keep coming across beautiful contemporary renditions time and time again of this traditional craft. The Cootie Catcher (the name itself makes it a deserving candidate to be featured here) Table re-imagines the ancient art and give it a bold modern twist with its sculpturistic structure. Designer Vivien Muller uses aluminum as the main material and isn't scared to dot the the base with nuts and bolts.

Who knew that the ancient Japanese tradition of folding paper into origami would translate into folded stainless steel as a staircase?
Meet the Origami Stairs, made out of stainless steel and shaped into triangular facets to create a flight of stairs. The 6 millimeter thick stainless steel is supported by a glass banister that provides the illusion of floating steps.
Designed by Bell Phillips architects out of South London, the Origami Stairs were created for a client that needed to join two flats together.

It's not rare for product designers to look at the traditional Japanese art of Origami for inspiration. Industrial Design student Daniel Levin does the same with a hint of quirkiness with his Opa Chair. Showing ingenuity by moulding his chair like origami shaped animals, the chair may not be big on comfort but will take center stage in any urban space.
