Creating a Useful Room from Attic Spaces

9:38 am in Architecture, Furniture, Interior Design by Will

Many houses come with some sort of attic space; these vary in size and shape depending on the building. The tragic thing about the humble attic is that the majority of them remain unused apart from being the home for old boxes and memories. However as you clearly see from these images, the attic or roof space, can be easily utilized into a valuable space, it could become another bedroom, study or if there is enough space another sitting room. The great thing about the attic is that it is already there and with a minimum of expense, a wonderful area can be created at the top of the house, image just how peaceful it could be having a whole floor converted into just one room. Of course, there are some barriers it's not all good news! Such as, making sure all of the building regulations are covered and then there is the cost, depending on the condition of the attic space before conversion takes place. However, if after all of that you end up with a room like those in the images, wouldn't it have been worth it?

A Country Summer House on the Isle of Wight

11:20 pm in Architecture, Home Design, Homes, Interior Design by Will

Whenever the words "a place in the country" are uttered the usual reaction is to think of a large rural house with a long drive leading up to manicured lawns and finely cut hedgerows, of course, that is Jane Austin and this the real world, where most people have to make do. However, making do, does not have to mean going without, take this small country cottage for instance, it is located on the Isle of Wight, which is along the southern coast of England. The building is nothing more than a summerhouse, which is a posh name for a shed. Yet this place has style and feeling, sure, not everyone can have the lakeside location, but the building is within the reach of most people. As for the decor, what grabs the attention is the simplicity of pastel shades and a minimum of furniture that makes the most of the space that is available without overcrowding the limited floor space, it is truly a place in the country, where relaxation is the order of the day.

Bar Stools made from Scrap and Reclaimed Wood

9:10 am in Chairs & Bar Stools, Furniture, Home Accessories by Will

The idea of furniture made from sustainable materials is catching on fast, but as with many products that use recycled materials, they often tend to work out more expensive than the non-sustainable variety, which can be a little frustrating to say the least.
However there are alternatives and these bar stools made from off cuts of wood is prime example of how scrap materials can be made into something wonderful and practical too! The wood had been used in the furniture trade, but these pieces are left over and ordinarily would have been discarded as waste. It was a firm of architects that came up with the idea of bundling off cuts of wood together and these bundles were sanded down before filling the gaps with wood putty, followed by a coating of linseed oil before a wax sealant is applied. The design came from a challenge laid down as part of the State of Design Festival in Australia, where architects were asked to use recycled materials to make design features for a developed bar.

Liquid Engineering for the Modern kitchen

4:03 am in Home Accessories, Interior Design, Kitchen Accessories, Kitchen Design & Furniture by Will

The modern kitchen is full of technology these days, therefore its quite nice to find some kitchen appliances that even though they based in scientific instruments, no technology is required just a keen eye for something that looks nice while doing the job that is asked of it.

First of all there is the plant pot, this is ideal for someone who is going away, just fill the bottle up with water and the plant will still be alive upon your return its simple and yet so very effective.

The wine pourer is a brilliant piece of design that turns pouring a glass of wine into a piece of performance theater. This is the perfect center piece for a dinner party, although clearly this is limited to just four glasses at a time.

There is something about glass that creates a feeling of style and class in a room and in particular, the kitchen because it is clean and bright, but it has to be kept cleaned all of the time, otherwise it will end up looking dull and dated.

The Hanging Lamp with a DNA Inspiration

Here is another unique hanging lamp that seems like a ribbon of sorts at first glance. Designers Paul Charlwood and Luca Abate created the "Ribbons of Life Lamp" to resemble a strand of DNA with help from a 3D printing and the highly shapeable ABS plastic. I bet this is one hanging light that would really cast some unusual shadows on the wall. Via
