Tis the season of awards. Be it the Golden Globes, Grammys or Oscars, everyone has or will be awarding the best. So we here at Furniture Fashion thought of running our own little award ceremony where we award the most innovative. The contenders? Design prototypes or concepts that are yet to be a reality. Who knows maybe our little endeavor will inspire the Powers Of Be to mass-produce them. So drum roll please as we list our favorite concepts.

Traditionally bookshelves don't have to accommodate your seating needs but designer Irina doesn't believe that as she has integrated six sofa pieces into the bookshelf.

Best Real E-Book Reader - Library e-book Reading Device

library-ebook .jpg

E-books may just be the future even though personally I think nothing beats the actual feel of a book. The Library e-book Reading Device also believes in this and works hard to recreate the experience of real books. It comes with two rotating mechanical rollers that stimulate page-flipping.

The Most Compact Dining Table - Kure Dining Table

KURE.jpg

Turkish designer Fatih Can Sarıöz believes that the family that eats together, stays together. Hence Kure is shaped like a pod, which can open up to accommodate six people to form a close-knit circle.

The Soft Refrigerator is ideal for those who have space issues as it comes equipped with folding and adjustable cubage just like a Tupperware product. Just fold the fridge up when there is no food left to store! The on board retractile bracing and soft coat allows for this convenient size-changing.

Most Green Printer - Pencil Printer

The idea behind this nifty portable printer is to use the lead shavings of a pencil as ink. Confused ? Well don't be as there is video too that explains how this thing works.

Best Suitcase on Wheels - OBAG

OBAG.png

The OBAG from Samsonite will take the weight of your shoulders thanks to its unique design concept. Apart from a giant wheel, the Samsonite OBAG roll-on bag features storage compartments and a collapsible handle.

Designed specifically for the physically impaired, this kettle has a pick-up and pour method of operation. So to use it, you just need to rotate the kettle body.

"At the top, the kettle body can be rotated backwards and forwards without the unit being destabilized, as the center of gravity is built into the kettle's cradling recess, whilst at the bottom, the surface is gripped firmly with a weighted base plate, and rubberized stoppers."

Most Relaxing Pillow - Glo Pillow

glo pillow bedding products

Wake up with a smile on your face as with the Glo Pillow you won't feel like biting the head of your family members. The pillow uses an LED fabric substrate below the surface to wake the user using light and is a great alternative to a screeching alarm clock.

Most Functional Music Player - Dual Music Player

Dual Music Player.jpg

The Dual Music Player by Yong-Seong Kim doesn't want you to throw out your CD collection. But that doesn't mean that you can't groove to your favorite digital tunes. The player supports both CD and MP3 files and has great minimalistic form factor.

Electrical Ecoshower.jpg

A brainchild of designer Andrea Diaz, the shower has been designed to reduce electrical consumption by about 70% and promotes higher life-cycle efficiency. We also like it for its sleek design.

Most Drool-Worthy Chair - Porsche Chair

Inspired by the sexy Porsche 911, the Porsche Chair Concept by Rohan Verma will be lapped up by all car connoisseurs. The chair tries to replicate the side profile of the 911's window frame and we love the end result.

Modern Sideboard with Great Storage from Etel

1:00 am in Decorating, Design, Dining Room Furniture, Furnishings, Furniture, Home, House, Ideas, Modern, Pictures, Sideboard, Storage by John

The modern sideboard pictured here is the "Vila Rica" from Etel Interiors. The thing that strikes me on this piece is how well the storage is laid out. The compartment on the top to store silverware, serving utensils and sterling silver is very accessible. I can imagine hosting a dinner party and needed something. With this piece, my needs would be met very quickly. Another interesting feature is that the design is transitional making this modern sideboard a fit in many other homes which may have a more eclectic mix of furniture. More information: here.

New School Trolley or Bar Serving Cart

5:00 pm in Accessories, Decorating, Design, Furniture, General, Home, House by John

If you are more "new school" then you might be looking for a trolley or bar serving cart that is not the typical two-level on wheels version. This piece called "Toto" features a design that is more like a cube and departs from the two level prototypes. A nice feature on the serving cart are the storage sections which offer better security from something "falling off the cart" in case one has too many drinks. More information: here.

Alexandre Moronnoz created this outdoor seating concept called the "Interference Urban Bench". The urban benches are made from laser cut metal. By contrast, the interior working shows disorder, movement and a lack of stability creating a unique overall theme to the piece. More information: here.

Nucleo: Where Furniture and Art Come Together in Design

5:56 pm in Art, Contemporary, Cool, Design, Exhibit, Furniture, Gallery, Home, House, Modern, Modern Furniture & Design by John

It can be said that "being primitive" takes design down to its deepest roots by breaking it down to its basic concepts. These designs come from Nucleo and feature three of their collections: Primitive, PH and Terra. Each of these themes provides a unique experience designed for both the furniture and art enthusiast.

abstract furniture
abstract tables
artistic lighting
furniture construction

Primitive: The workmanship makes unrepeatable and unique objects: made entirely by hand without the use of presswork and finished with non-toxic resins that reveal signs and imperfections. Living Primitive elements reflect on elementary forms used by Le Corbusier to create architectural and urban space. The return to structure is a twentieth Century leit-motiv, with artistic avant-garde, from Cubism, to Abstract art, to Constructivism, Suprematism. The art is free from 'enslavement' to the subject, able to translate the motions of the human soul with the pure colour or pure form.

PH Series: Inspired by molecular structures and crystal lattices created when atoms bond to one another, PH is a pentagonal modular made in expanded polyurethane. The pentagonal shape allows an ample number of configurations by drawing closer the various sides.

Nucleo primitive lamp
Nucleo silver seating
garden chair made from grass

Terra: Terra is not a finished product, is an idea; we provide the cardboard frame and the seeds, the main ingredient, the dirt can be found everywhere on our planet. The armchair is born in your garden and becomes part of your landscape.
Terra! is not only a grass arm-chair, is an arm-chair of the world; if you are in a desolate suburb surrounded with cement, make it out of cement, if you live in front of an American highway, make it out of asphalt, if you are in the north pole use the snow. More information: here.

These sliding wood doors were created by designer Rodolfo Dordoni for Molteni & C. The product is called Glide and features a series of panels and doors that make up the compilation. The overall design of the product is very minimal to create a blended look in a home where the wood compliments the interior décor. If you like to open up a home and allow the rooms to connect, these types of systems can be attractive as opposed to traditional doors which are narrow in comparison. More information: here.
