Finding inspiration for a remodel

10:18 pm in Contemporary by Shellie

Quite often, the problem is not planning a remodel or even redecorating, you may even have the funds just burning a hold in your pocket ,waiting to be spent; sometimes, the problem is simply deciding what you want to do! Whether your mind is blank or if you’re over-inspired with so many fantastic ideas that you can’t decide on one, these tips will help get on track.

Finding Inspiration

If you’re having a hard time finding something to inspire you, maybe you’re looking for too much. Instead of trying to vision an entire room, perhaps find a rug, piece of art or a color that just draws you in and then plan your decorating scheme around that. Sometimes just looking through magazines, browsing the internet or going shopping will trigger the design that you’ve been looking for.

Finding Your Style

Don’t be afraid to try something that is totally not you! If you’ve always had neutral rooms, go bold! Been doing the contemporary thing since before it was in style? Why not try Victorian? It’s always a thrill to shop for antiques and vintage items.

Reuse What You Can

On a budget? Quite often, just changing the paint color on your walls, buying a new cover for the couch, moving the furniture around and adding a few new decorative pillows is all that you need to get you out of the boring rut that you’ve found yourself in.

Address Your Lighting

Whether you’re doing an entire remodel or just sprucing things up a bit, don’t overlook your lighting. There is nothing exciting about that same light fixture you’ve been looking at for the past 10 years. Adding pendants, recess lighting, chandeliers, wall scones or an assortment of fun lamps will give your space an instant facelift. You can’t imagine the impact that stylish lighting can have on a room until you see the transformation!

Would You Rather: Chandelier or Drum?

8:04 pm in Modern Lighting by Katie

If you had to absolutely choose between one or the other – which would you rather – a chandelier or a drum? And where would you put it?

Chandeliers come in so many different varieties – some ginormous, some smaller, some colored, some clear and sparkly. The one thing I would never choose in a chandelier is lights that look like big fake candles. It just takes away from the glamour effect of a chandelier, if you ask me. Also, I know many kinds of lights are referred to as chandeliers, but for me, I think of beautiful chandeliers in the image above when I think of chandeliers – not anything beaded or crazy like that. Now I’m not saying those aren’t considered chandeliers – just not what immediately comes to mind, ya feel?!?!

So what about drum lights? I have one hanging about my kitchen table and I love it. It’s just a plain linen, not as dramatic as the black shade shown above. But, sometimes you just can’t beat the clean, modern look that a drum shade brings into a room.

So, if push came to shove, I would rather have a chandelier. How about you??

Illuminate Your Home with Brilliant Lighting

10:05 pm in Lighting by Shellie

While it can be a challenge at times to keep up with design trends, one thing that will never go out of style is brilliant lighting. In many homes, a flip of the switch and an occasional lamp is the extent of the thought process when it comes to adding lighting to decor however, light should be used to highlight accents, not be an afterthought. Of course, natural light is always welcome and preferred but when the sun isn’t finding its way through your windows, you need to brighten your home with style.

  • Pendants – Hanging multiple pendants together over an island or kitchen table certainly adds a lot of original and interest to your room.
  • Strands – Think string lighting with big round bulbs! These can be hung in an endless number of configurations. You can create a waterfall with several strands or even use them to divide off a room.
  • Chandelier – While you may not associate chandeliers with modern design, you will be surprised at the styles that are available today. Chandeliers simply have a way of demanding attention and becoming a focal point in any room.
  • Waterfall – Table top lamps that feature strands of reflected glass or metallic beads will add sparkle to your space. Set them near a mirror for a real treat!

Gothic Bicycle Chandeliers By Carolina Fontoura Alzaga

8:57 am in Eco Friendly, Lamps & Lighting, Luxury by Tanya

The almost Gothic looking bicycle chandeliers pictured below look somethings straight out of the Victorian Era. However looks certainly can be deceptive. Designed by Mexican artist Carolina Fontoura Alzaga, the sculpturistic chandeliers are nothing short of incredible since they have been manufactured from old cycle parts! The bicycle chandelier takes the process of reclamation to unparalleled heights and impresses by embracing its ecological responsibility wholeheartedly. The dark brooding quality of the bicycle chandeliers is hard to miss and it's commendable how Alzaga discards traditional materials and challenges conventional design norms.

3D TulipK Lamp Was Made Using Microsoft Excel!

6:28 am in Lamps, Lamps & Lighting, Lights by Tanya

Microsoft is not very well received in the design community as its no secret that most design professional fancy anything that falls from the Apple tree. However product designer Ben Geebelen uses something as dull as Microsoft Excel to come up with something as gorgeous as the TulipK Lamp. This stunning piece of lighting is a result of Selective Laser Sintered in polyamide which in english means that the pattern was designed in Excel and the file in 3-matic.The shade has 6 tulip petals surrounding the light bulb and the designer used a spread sheet to determine the locations of all 2374 holes punching through one petal.
