Skeletal Seating

3:02 pm in Furniture, Seating by Troy Turner

Street artist turned industrial designer, Geert Decock’s latest work is this incredible chair that finds a delicate balance between form and function. Bent from a single sheet of aluminum, the Backbone chair is supported by a single tube located where the seat and backrest meet, providing it with not only added security, but a nice bounce when you sit down!

See, Cardboard is Cool

3:01 pm in Furniture, Seating by Troy Turner

The limited edition Prejudice furniture collection features a nested seat and footrest combination that is as functionally versatile as it is eco-friendly. Made of 100% recycled cardboard and produced through a sustainable production process, the series is a creative way of raising awareness of the importance of sustainable growth and recycling while also smashing the stigmas associated with cardboard.

Blood Sucking Seating

3:02 pm in Furniture, Seating by Troy Turner

As you might infer from the name, the Batwings chair takes inspiration from the flying bat, adapting the form of its webbed wings to a seating solution that is as feral as it is gothic. Taking from the physics of the bat’s skeletal system, the internal structure provides natural support and also adds to the wild animal feel.

The Mantis Chair

3:01 pm in Furniture, Seating by Troy Turner

Wildetect’s Mantis Chair takes inspiration from the African wilderness, adopting the form of one of its iconic creatures, the giant praying mantis. Admittedly, a certain level of comfort was sacrificed in the design, but its wild, sculptural aesthetic ensures it to be the primary focal point of any room.

Abstraction of Form

12:50 am in Furniture, Seating by Troy Turner

The simple, yet striking Ariva furniture series is an example of neoplasticism in its purest form. Each piece avoids symmetry and attains aesthetic balance by the use of opposition. The designs play with the geometry of the straight line, square and rectangle combined with strong asymmetricality to skew the viewer’s perception. From the side, each piece is slender and skeletal, but from the front appears thick and robust. In pure white, the series is as refined as it is peculiar.

Steampunk Style

3:03 pm in Furniture, Seating by Troy Turner

The RESPONSUM LEVARE C Sub B3 Chair emphasizes a balance between form and function, blurring the line between utilitarian object and decoration. Its cog-like components and combination of latigo leather and maple dowels with high-tech Richlite fiber composite create a pseudo-Victorian “steampunk” aesthetic that’s sure to make it the focal point of any room. Eccentric, but very handsome nonetheless.

Wooden Perfection

3:02 pm in Furniture, Seating by Troy Turner

Inspired by the rings of a tree, the organic shape and texture of the GVAL chair’s alternating sheets of plywood serve as a visual and tangible reminder of both nature and memory. Perfectly nested inside the hollow chair are 2 additional segments that can be used as footrests, or combined to form another chair. Magnifique!

GVAL is a First Prize Winner in the Making Chairs category of the interational
competition Art On Chairs, awarded by the Paredes Center of Furniture
Design.

Keep Moving

3:00 pm in Furniture, Seating by Troy Turner

The Osca Task Chair is the result of a study into how a seat could be designed to encourage active movement during a static task, such as desk work, versus current market designs that do little for the dynamic nature of the human body. A rocking base encourages movement and balance while contoured cushions embrace the form of the body for enhanced ergonomics. The final product is not only functionally healthy, but aesthetically distinct from the classic, banal office chair.
