What does a modern living room mean to you?

8:56 am in Trend Spotlight, Urban by Shellie

If you are thinking that you’re ready to give your living room a modern look, you may feel like a fish out of water. For many people, this is a huge transition! If you have found yourself a little lost and don’t quite know where to begin you should know that there are many variations to the word modern. So, if you are struggling to fit into a cookie-cutter theme, relax and enjoy your redecorating. Chances are, you’re trying way too hard!

Minimalist

For the less is more look, you have to be ready to completely commit to clutter-free living. You can’t have a minimalist room with unnecessary items laying around. Aim to stick with three colors but you can bring a few extra colors in with artistic pieces. Sofas should be plain with straight lines, patterns really have no home here.

Feng Shui

The goal with Feng Shui is to create a perfect balance. You don’t want all straight lines. You need to add in a few rounded items such as bean bag chair, round mirror, sphere or round stainless steel serving tray. Earth, water, fire, metal and wood are the five elements of Feng Shui. Ideally you will incorporate these into the room. Adding a water feature, tabletop fireplace, stone tiles and clay pots will help you achieve the look!

Urban

Think texture and aim for pieces that remind you of countries such as Italy or Belgium. Glass, ceramic and metals should be scattered throughout the room and don’t forget vibrant pieces of art and pillows, rugs and curtains in various colors and textures!

Single Motion Folding

4:02 pm in Urban by Radhika-Seth

Diamove is yet another folding bicycle concept but with its own innovations. It’s an easy folding bike featuring front wheel drive to support better posture. While riding, the weight of your body is totally on the pelvis rather than your wrists and feet. It sports a wheel-in-wheel folding scheme with a “single- motion” swoop. The awesome part is that when folded, it’s just a single wheel body that you need to stack-up in a cozy corner, but don’t call it a unicycle!

The Very Urban Heist

4:00 pm in Urban, office by Radhika-Seth

Crumpler, an Australian bag company, creates chic and smart urban bags, particularly their Heist Collection. The range is an ode to the working professional who doesn’t believe in sacrificing style. Each of the four Heist bags are designed to carry your tech gear and accommodates a 15 or 17 inch Macbook. A common thread between all four bags is a padded laptop sleeve, two internal pockets and a zipped external pocket. All of them, except for the backpack, even come with a shoulder strap. The unique wing design provides support and strength to the bags where needed, allowing the main body to be soft and lightweight.

The Heist Collection

The Dedarang Heist

If you’re a fan of briefcases but don’t want the typical bland office look, then the Dedarang Heist is for you. It’s a sleek slim-line bag that will care for your 15” notebook. The unisex style is so versatile, and for AUD $150, it’s a steal!

The Keith Heist

Interference Urban Benches by Alexandre Moronnoz

4:00 am in Art, Design, Furniture, Garden, Patio, Patio & Outdoor Furniture, Urban by John

Alexandre Moronnoz created this outdoor seating concept called the "Interference Urban Bench". The urban benches are made from laser cut metal. The outer appearance creates a calm reflective surface upon which to sit and enjoy the outdoors. By contrast, the interior working shows disorder, movement and a lack of stability creating a unique overall theme to the piece. More information: here.

Innovative Office Workstation and Resting Sleep Box

5:00 am in Design, General, Sleep, Travel, Urban, Workstations, office by John

It's hard not to get excited about Sleepbox, an office workstation and resting pod designed for public places like train stations, airports and bus terminals. These small pods are rental units that provide travelers peace and quite as well as a place to work. More aggressive urban areas may even consider these for use on the streets or as a solution for the homeless. Sleepbox comes equipped with wi-fi, electric plugs, TV, a ventilation system and charging sockets for cell phones. The bed linen is changed automatically to ensure proper hygiene standards are kept. Currently, there is construction of these units in the Dubai airport with hopefully more places to follow. More information: here.
