I love this concept of turning food relief packets to something useful, especially if used in disaster struck areas. The idea is to bundle food (rice) and water into this brick-like module, which can later be used to build temporary shelters. Thanks to their Lego inspired shape, the UNICEF Brick structures promise to be sturdy as temporary shanties.

Well, sort of. Latvian designer Arthur Analt’s Shelf WOW was inspired by the Latvian ethnographic symbol “mara,” a representation of the love and safety given by a mother- and just like “mara,” WOW will cradle and keep all your personal belongings safe-n-sound! The shelf is bent from a single, specially cut aluminum sheet and powder coated in a number of brilliant colors.

Plyght is a clever shelving design by Joeri Reynaert that features a long, fluid bend on its wall side that not only stabilizes items but hides its fixture elements, giving the appearance that its thin body is floating effortlessly against the wall. To accent the the illusion, this functional prototype also integrates upwards and downwards lighting. Molded wood and 3D veneers give this modern presentation a retro feel that will fit nicely into both contemporary and classic settings.

Jack in the box was created for the course “Homo Ludens” (trans. The Playing Man) hosted by the School of Arts and Crafts in Gothenburg, Sweden. The goal was to create a playful piece of furniture for the school’s exebition at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. By cranking the handle, a frequent tapping sound will start and the shelfsystem hidden inside the solid body will appear beneath the box. The system contains of three 40x20cm (dubbelkolla) shelves of oak wood. Loving it!

I have a strange pet peeve- I hate when people display things on top of their coffee tables. Doesn’t matter if its books, photo albums, or knickknacks… it drives me crazy. Problem solved! Ok, so maybe it’s not really a prob to anyone else, but it’s exactly why I appreciate Mitch Steinmetz’s Rememberance coffee table. Instead of acting as a medium for the user and their entertainment, it becomes the entertainment…Taking the form of the common album, the coffee table flips open to reveal tchotchkes, memorabilia, photos etc., encouraging the creation of new memories while cataloging old ones.

This modular shelving unit by Sam Holmes focuses on the use of a simplified metal connector to combine equally sized planks together to form it’s honeycomb compartments. The finished product is a geometrically efficient structure that uses the least amount of material possible to create a lattice of hexagonal cells that can be modified for the perfect fit within a space. Mmm, I’m suddenly hungry for honeycomb cereal.

Using the stories of their materials to create new and strong narratives, the M.&Mme series of cabinets aim to provide a functional and relational experience for the subject. The porthole and repurposed bankirai wood ship-plank doors give a nod to their watery roots and present a nostalgia toward their previous lives. Even if Spanish-Mediterranean isn’t your style, you’ll love the craftsmanship.

I wuvvv the practical design of this shelving system. The shelves of the S03 can be assembled to any size or combination to adapt to the desired space. For easy and cost-efficient transportation, the European beech components fit together snugly to create the smallest, most compact packing size possible.

While visiting a natural history museum, designer Jingfeng Fang got inspired when admiring a piece of wood that had been devoured by worms. For this five drawer set he used a drill to create a dynamic pattern imitating bug bites. I’m not usually for something made to look “old” or weathered but this interesting and humorous design evokes the imagination of a past event with distinctive storytelling.
