How to Make a Small Space Stylish

3:47 am in Space by Lauren

We’d all love unlimited space and shapes to work with when designing our ideal modern interiors, but usually that just isn’t possible. Whether you’re struggling with a small guest bedroom or a whole apartment, we’ve got some solutions for how you can make a small space stylish – while maximizing on its functionality.

First, think storage. We all have more stuff than we think, and you’re going to need a place to store it. There are many creative ways of increasing storage space while retaining style, such as:

  • Creating platform floors a few inches above the natural floor for some extra slide-in storage space underneath.
  • Building shelves around door frames.
  • Using the ceiling to creatively hang fabrics and clothing.
  • Purchasing beds, ottomans and chairs that have built-in storage cubbies.

You can also use color to make a small space pop. Highlight the walls in a nice bright or pastel color – just avoid anything too dark, as dark colors often give the impression that a room is smaller than it actually is.

Dividers can be used to break up a space and make it look larger than it is. If you have a bachelor apartment or a single room that you don’t know what to do with, you can purchase one or more dividers to make it appear like two rooms. This way, you’ll have more space and more options for creatively decorating two separate spaces.

And lastly, small spaces are intrinsically cozy – so play it up! Use soft materials, plush couches, and lots of blankets and pillows to make your small space even more inviting.

This product is called the "Aerialist Point Low Table" and is made by Objeti. At first glance it appears to be a normal side or end table. In truth, however, it is much more. I immediately thought of our small space furniture readers who are always looking for clever products with multiple functions. At a quick twist of a lever, Aerialist changes from a table to a stool which can offer extra seating when company comes to visit. Buy the product: here.

Spacewalker Pendant/Floor Lamp Is Pretty Spaced Out

3:29 am in Lamps, Lamps & Lighting, Lighting, Pendant Lights, Space by Tanya

If vibrant hues, dramatic shapes and whacky designs gets your creative juices flowing then check out the Spacewalker. A brainchild of the inimitable Constantin Wortmann the pendant/floor lamp is part whimsical, part outrageous and a whole lot fun. The futuristic theme defines the lamp as the Spacewalker is suppose to be a "friendly creature exploring new territory to put a smile on your face." The resemblance to the Martians from Tim Burton's Mars Attacks is uncanny and another reason why we love this little bugger so much.

Often with space a challenge for decorating a room it makes sense to go with items that don't dominate a room's appearance. This small leather couch fits that mold. The overall design is very simple which helps keep its appearance and subsequent effect on a room minimal. The product is called Amerigo and is available in white or brown leather here.

Remodeling in Chicago Photos – A Space Reinvented

5:00 am in Architecture, Art, Home, House, Remodeling, Space by John

Remodeling in Chicago is quite common for families wishing to update an urban space due to the age of many properties in town. These photos show an apartment located in the old Montgomery Ward headquarters. This property has great views of the John Hancock Center and the surrounding skyline. The apartment is an L-shape allowing for many unique spaces to be created. The owner’s wishes were to create a living space for the family and a public art gallery all in one space. As an owner of an art gallery it makes sense to make the home inviting to VIP clients that need a more intimate setting than the art gallery alone. The architects on the project were Wheeler Kearns. More of their work can be found here.

Furniture for Small Apartments by Ivydesign

At Furniture Fashion our hat’s off to Verena Lang founder of Ivydesign. We hear a lot of requests from readers living in small apartments about the challenge of space planning and furniture. This product from Verena is called “Picture Table”. The neat thing about Picture Table is how it can provide a table and even a place for guests to dine on, and then fold-up into a picture on a wall. The picture looks perfectly natural and in no way looks like a table. There is also a mirror version as well if a mirror is preferred over a picture. You can learn more about the product here at Ivydesign.
