Mobile Communications for the Deaf

11:39 pm in Sound by Long Tran

The Communicaid is a whole system of products designed to facilitate communication between deaf and hearing people.  The Visual Sound Station and Glasses are portable devices for indoor and outdoor use. It catches important sounds from the environment and alerts deaf people visually. The Mobile Communicator is a handheld communication device to communicate with hearing people more efficiently and conveniently. Intrigued? Hit the jump.

The Communicaid Visual Sound Station uses high quality MEMS microphones to capture specific sounds such as fire alarms, doorbells, or an individual calling and transfers them into visual queues of blinking lights and pictograms.

Visual Sound Glasses listens for the sounds of the environment, then translates it into visual signals in front of their eyes. It captures specific sounds through the the eyeglass arms.

The Mobile Communicator device features mobile phone functions e.g. video calls, SMS, e-mail, etc. Make and receive calls with anyone using text to voice and voice to text technology. This is the kind of natural speech technology designers and engineers have been dreaming up for years.

When Noise is Good for Lights!

11:21 pm in Electricity, Green, Outdoor, Sound by Radhika-Seth

C’mon noise can never be good or pleasant for anything! This pollutant give me enough grief when they tear down an old building and bring in them drill machines and saws! The only way I’m going to like them is if something useful like sound harvesting is done! Something like the Eco Noise, where these special tiles absorb the noise and convert it to energy to power up the gates with mesmerizing lights display. The idea is sweet, but I’d much rather power just one lamp than have a fancy fence.

The Eco Noise is a Lotus Prize entry.

Toolkit for Impact Sounds

4:01 pm in Sound by Troy Turner

This collection of leather tools is purposed for sound designers in the fields of theater and cinema. The varying combinations of size, leather type, and shape create a wide range of percussion sounds from the thud to the shwud. Lightweight materials wrap up easily in a canvas folding pack, making the toolkit handy and portable. Personally, I’m a fan of the whump.

Wooden Earbuds

4:03 pm in Sound by Chris-Burns

Headphones with a small eco-footprint? Well that’s just crazy! Wait though, looks like there’s something like that right here: “thinksound ts02+mic” – and they say they sound incredible. Made with real wood creating natural resonance and “unparalleled acoustics.” Sounds like some sweetness to me! Even the packaging is made with recycled materials using minimal plastic components. The cables are PVC-free and the wood is chosen from renewable sources. Super!

Take a peek at the official specs:

Hybrid Tube Amplifier By Koichi Futatsumata

1:25 am in Sound, TV Stands & Home Theater by Tanya

Koichi Futatsumata for Elikit has designed the Hybrid Tube Amplifier which epitomizes the philosophy "form follows function". Designed to complement modern and minimalist decor, the Hybrid Tube Amplifier will be a great addition to any audio or home theater set up. Measuring 265mm W x 103mm H x 151mm D, the compact form factor is no coincidence and doesn't even act as deterrent when it comes to the output. 12W + 12W is the rated power output and it also has a frequency response of 15~30000Hz. The on board input jacks ensure support for component players and portable music players and its Zen like design makes quite a visual statement.
