Sublime Shelving

4:03 pm in Furniture, Shelf, Shelving by Troy Turner

I want this and I want it BAD! Smartsquare is a simple, beautiful and customizable shelving solution made of bent plywood (and pure genius) that takes modularity to the next level. Each square module can be connected through side-slits that allow the creation of unique compositions that can be adapted to any size space or style.

Furnishings on Fire

4:02 pm in Desk, Furniture, Led, Lighting, Shelves, Shelving, Table by Troy Turner

While LED light is energy efficient and long lasting, it can also be hard to look at! With this in mind, Estudi Arola’s BlancoWhite series of table-top bookcases, shelving and wall lamps feature hidden strips of LED that are focused toward the center of each piece, creating a warm, indirect glow that won’t blind the viewer. It’s a versatile collection that’s as beautiful in the dark as it is in the light.

Pieces in the series consist of thin metal casings, 1 cm thick, that house sheets of methacrylate on two sides to accommodate the LED light strips. The internal surface of each sheet is woven with micro incisions by laser that are more subtle on the edges and deeper toward the center to achieve a plane with a certain concavity that is lit evenly.

Not Your Mom’s Shelf

3:01 pm in Furniture, Shelf, Shelving, Storage by Troy Turner

Well, sort of. Latvian designer Arthur Analt’s Shelf WOW was inspired by the Latvian ethnographic symbol “mara,” a representation of the love and safety given by a mother- and just like “mara,” WOW will cradle and keep all your personal belongings safe-n-sound! The shelf is bent from a single, specially cut aluminum sheet and powder coated in a number of brilliant colors.

Light as a Feather Shelving

3:01 pm in Furniture, Living, Shelf, Shelving, Storage by Troy Turner

Plyght is a clever shelving design by Joeri Reynaert that features a long, fluid bend on its wall side that not only stabilizes items but hides its fixture elements, giving the appearance that its thin body is floating effortlessly against the wall. To accent the the illusion, this functional prototype also integrates upwards and downwards lighting. Molded wood and 3D veneers give this modern presentation a retro feel that will fit nicely into both contemporary and classic settings.

Avian Furniture

3:01 pm in Furniture, Seating, Shelf, Shelving by Troy Turner

Giving a nod to its avian inspiration, the Airline Furniture collection of seating and shelving by Jeremy Heitz is constructed of used parts taken from various aircraft and reflects the shapes and sturdiness of the planes they came from. Here the HB-Table and HB-Shelf (named after the Swiss aircraft from which they were formed) are made from an adapted wing and accented with glass to make the rigid aircraft rib construction visible.

Scribble Inspiration!

3:01 pm in Furniture, Seating, Shelf, Shelving, Table by Troy Turner

Believe it or not, scribbling as a child serves as a very important part of neurological development. It trains the brain to both pay attention and sustain attention, and stimulates the brain to organize shapes and patterns- the first stages of design! Marque is a whimsical furniture collection by designer Joyce Hye Kim inspired by these first scribbles. The contemporary chair, table, and shelf serve as a reminder that even a simple doodle can evolve into something timeless and sophisticated.

Bloated Objects

10:39 pm in Desk, Furniture, Shelf, Shelving, Table by Troy Turner

This table isn’t prego and no, it didn’t eat too much. It’s the Bloated Desk and it and it’s siblings the Bloated Shelf and Bloated Coat Hanger, are, well… they’re just sort of bloated! This intriguing take on the familiar incorporates a fairly simple process to achieve the form – no complicated molds and no seams are used in production, instead, sheets of leather are filled with expanding foam, inflating the leather to make naturally unique pieces.

Succession Furniture Collection

3:01 pm in Furniture, Shelving, Stools by Troy Turner

The eccentric pieces in this new upholstered furniture collection by Fredrik Färg stimulate the imagination with their animal-like form and feeling of movement. The textile and leather shelving and stools even have all the markings of a beast of burden. Individual pieces are bound in rope, heated, and then cut loose to produce a seamless pattern that is as harsh as it is civilized. According to Färg, they’ve become the family he “never knew he had.”

Bee Charmin’ Shelving

3:01 pm in Furniture, Shelf, Shelving, Storage by Troy Turner

This modular shelving unit by Sam Holmes focuses on the use of a simplified metal connector to combine equally sized planks together to form it’s honeycomb compartments. The finished product is a geometrically efficient structure that uses the least amount of material possible to create a lattice of hexagonal cells that can be modified for the perfect fit within a space. Mmm, I’m suddenly hungry for honeycomb cereal.
