3:03 pm in Music by Troy Turner

Check out Beat, the ultimate, all-in-one running accessory! This gesture controlled device will play your music, monitor your heart rate, count your strides, and even call you fat when you’re about to give up (I kid! But hey… it might as well.). Beat uses an innovative gesture interface that seamlessly integrates into the running experience. No more sweaty fingers or touch displays. Flick your hand right/left to switch songs, twist it to pump up the volume, or play your power song by punching forward! Do want!

Copy Cat

3:01 pm in Music by Troy Turner

From boosts in IQ scores to improvements in self esteem,  music is a valuable activity  that can contribute immensely to the development of a child. Copy Cats is an early education tool that brings playtime and learning together in the form of interactive stories, or “cat-tales,” introducing kids to basic music elements such as singing, playing, listening, and even composing. I don’t even think I could resist pushing those cute kitty-cat-buttons.

The Block

3:47 pm in Music by Troy Turner

This amp is made of aluminum, stainless steel, and 100% pure common sense. The super-cool looking Block amplifier sticks strictly to Hi-Fi audio rules by placing the components that spread the most electromagnetic interference (AC, power transformers, chokes) in individual compartments the furthest distance possible from audio lines. Block’s main soundboard swings up on hinges to enable dusting of the internal electronics without the need to disconnect cumbersome wires.

Acoustic Landscaping

3:30 pm in Music, Speakers by Troy Turner

The guys at Architettura Sonora are redefining the listening experience with an array of sound modules that are both acoustically customized and geometrically shaped to enhance music listening indoors and out, freeing listeners from both spatial constraints and noise pollution. AS’s fine-tuned system of sculptures uses directional and omnidirectional sound emission to either direct or spread a flawless stream of music to a predefined space, creating an oasis of surround-sound or isolated music zone.

No Strings Attached

6:32 pm in Music by Troy Turner

Introducing the Hyper Touch Guitar. From the mind of Max Battaglia at Givingshape Design Studio, this unorthodox design replaces strings with a multi-touch screen, allowing the user to adjust the number of “strings” and frets, as well as tuning and sound effects. A wireless command center that permits endless customization and infinite possibilities of expression.

It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…

4:03 pm in Music by Troy Turner

Wait, no… it’s just your old stereo flying out the window. I’m not going to school you about vinyl VS digital, but seriously, could it get any better? The Dala vinyl player’s physical form has been adapted to incorporate new flat membrane speaker technology.  The speakers or “fins” make up the wing-like structure on either side of the platter. The Dala is sure to be the center of attention in any room, but if you are going vinyl- go big or go home.

Designer: Bradley Paulet

The “fins” or thin membrane speakers are of varying size; each one calculated perfectly to fully attain the scope of frequencies. Each fin is also followed by an acrylic reflector plate that is tapered in three directions, propagating the sound outward and left and right of the unit.  Sound is radiated 180 degrees in vertical and horizontal axes, achieving the best possible sound output no matter the location of the listener.

Each component has it’s own dedicated vibration dampening wall mount and suspension to ensure the best possible sound output.

The wireless control is minimal and can be housed in the main unit as a volume control knob or released and used remotely.

Wooden Earbuds

4:03 pm in Music by Chris-Burns

There are two approaches you might take when you’re designing earbuds. One of them is to make them so intensely perfect with sound quality that their appearance doesn’t matter. The other, the one that designer Sung-Ching Chang designed, is made to be fantastic in form. These earbuds have wooden covers for buds, and they look fantastic. Could anyone ever bring a more lovely look to a tiny set of sound bringers? There’s even a microphone inside and a volume control near the left ear. Completely cute!

Invisible Dome of Audio

4:03 pm in Music, Speakers by Chris-Burns

Behold one wild bit of smoke and mirrors – in a good way! This is The Dome, an all-in-one stereo system that both plays audio CDs and can load music from musical devices such as the iPod. From a distance, this stereo appears to be a giant black disk. Once you approach it, the controls, the iPod, or the disks become visible for you to access and change as you wish. Such subtlety is magic.

Hopefully Iliescu creates a version that can also play vinyl records and music from USB drives – that’d be the best! Also Bluetooth. As far as the form of this design goes, though, it’s amazing and perfect. Seek additional details on this product in the image presentation below, and see that it gets made in real life!

Nothing But Scratch

4:03 pm in Music by Chris-Burns

Take a peek at this record player. It’s the kind that plays vinyl records, the 12″ kind, and it does it well with only the bare minimum. Fantastical! It’s called “Turnstyle” and it’s made up of the motor, the needle, the speakers, and the controls. What more do you need? It’s a skeleton of its former self, and not former as in it was stripped, former as in there’s no reason to ever go back to more!

This project is designed by RD Silver, a designer who has the guts to take away everything but the guts. The requirements for function set upon this project were the following: spin record, on/off, volume, speaker, and needle. As far as design requirements: no corners, no hard edges, no 90 degree angles. Simple? Simple. Send me 10.

Helping Kids Realize Music

4:03 pm in Music by Chris-Burns

So you’ve got a bunch of kids and you want to teach them all about music theory. What do you do? And not only that, what do you do if you want to keep materials and cost to minimum? This is a system by designer Loris Bottello that allows children to interact directly with the notes. Kids pull the sides of the object to set the length of the sounds right there in real time. This system is totally cool, working with kids to recognize both duration and pitch.
