Modern Houseboat Will Make You Fall in Love with Water

11:51 pm in Architecture, Design, Furniture, Modern, Modern Furniture & Design by chris

Living in a houseboat is not for everyone but when you have modern houseboat while the one in the images below, you're going to realize there's only one thing to do. That's fall in love with water and embrace your new-found life aboard this modern houseboat. The outer design doesn't do justice to what you will find inside, and once you step through its doors you'll forget you left the main land. The dominant color is white and it definitely is a great choice for both the large bedroom found at the lower level, and for the kitchen and living room found on the upper level. The modern but simple furniture and overall design lines are definitely going to make you fall in love with this houseboat and I see no reason for making this one a permanent home. Via Design Blog

Oh, Oh It’s Magica, You Know…

10:47 pm in Chairs, Modern, SixDW: A New Beginning by Lyn

magica

Designed by Italian designer Davide Conti, the Magica and Magica 2 Chair appear to be magically standing on one leg. The Magica, the black chair, is designed to appear that it receives support from the back of the chair that extends down while the Magica 2, the white chair, zig-zags to theoretically gain support from the front of the chair. However, there are two transparent plexiglass pieces on each side of the chairs that sturdily support the body and make it usable.

Although the Magica Chairs are still in the conceptual phase, they would be a great way to fool friends at home or guests and passersby in restaurants and hotels.

Here’s a better look at the transparent plexiglass on each chair:

What do you think about the Magica Chairs? Would you be comfortable sitting in them?

House of Concrete

8:41 pm in House, Modern, SixDW: A New Beginning by SixDifferentWays

He can huff and he can puff as much as he wants, but the big bad wolf definitely won’t be able to blow down a house of concrete.

Designed by Spanish architect group A-cero, the Concrete House II is located just outside of Madrid. The outside walls are made of dark gray concrete and built with strips of grass between them to create the illusion that the house is actually part of land. With an indoor spa and swimming pool, home theater, wine room and parking garage, the Concrete House II is a luxurious retreat. Even some of the modern decor and furniture appears to be made from concrete!

A-cero’s blog tells us that the Concrete House II is a single story home that measures at 1600 square meters, which is about 17,222 square feet. Imagine living in a space that big. It would be great for a good ol’ game of hide-and-seek…

So what do you think – would you live in the Concrete House II?

Unlike the good ol’ schooldays, you won’t get in trouble for having these Paper Planes. Designed by Nipa Doshi and Jonathon Levien  of Doshi Levian for Moroso, Paper Planes are paper-like seating arrangements made from a sturdy steel frame. The fun and colorful striped covers are removable for easy washing.

With a low armchair and a high armchair, there are plenty of options for the Paper Planes. As paper planes made from paper can be folded into different uses, each of these Paper Planes can be situated differently to offer several seating options.

For more information on Paper Planes, check them out on Moroso’s website.

Ten Characteristics of a Modern Kitchen Found in House Beautiful’s 2010 Kitchen of The Year

8:43 pm in Modern, SixDW: A New Beginning by SixDifferentWays

This year’s House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year was designed by Jeff Lewis of Bravo’s Flipping Out. To reflect his personal aesthetic, Jeff Lewis says he took a “California modern” approach to designing this year’s kitchen.

To play off of his observation, we’ve put together a list of ten characteristics of a modern kitchen as they are found in House Beautiful’s 2010 Kitchen of the Year.

koty2

  1. Dark Wood – The cabinets are a rich brown that stretch throughout the kitchen.
  2. Metal – Hints of metal are scattered from the island stools to the stainless steel appliances to the counter accessories.
  3. Openness – Jeff Lewis said overbuilt cabinets create claustrophobia, so he chose door-less shelves to create an open feel.
  4. Wood + White – Clean white countertops break up the dark wood cabinetry and the light wood flooring.
  5. Functionality – The open wine storage wall lets in tons of natural light while doubling as a place to store wine and other bottled beverages.
  6. koty1

  7. Natural Light – Already mentioned in number 5, the wall-storage wall, in addition to the light colors, allow for plenty of natural light.
  8. Pops of Color – Red panels on the far wall add an element of surprise.
  9. Eco-friendly – The kitchen table is made from reclaimed wood taken from an old polo barn.
  10. Minimalistic Pieces – The polished metal island stools, the chairs at the kitchen table, the interesting light fixture are all simple and stylish pieces.
  11. Storage – There is a ton of storage space in this kitchen with cabinets on both sides of the countertops that eliminate visible clutter.

What are some other modern characteristics you see in the 2010 Kitchen of the Year?

Let's face it. Bathtubs can be one of the most important features in a home. These 18 examples from Agape are cool and modern and designed to create a luxury experience designed to restore the body's energy. The first thing that comes to mind in selecting the right tub is picking the best shape for your bathroom space. Rectangular is most popular though there are a few round examples in the article as well. Another consideration is whether it should be free-standing, attached to a wall or sunken into the floor. Lerny Woo is a young designer living in Toulouse, France who has provided us with a new furniture design called "Venice". The design is a chair that strikes me as a day bed as well which would be great to spend a lazy day enjoying oneself in their home. Construction of Venice consists of composite material with Galuchat leather. Lerny is in the process of developing a website so look to hear more about that in the future.
