Edoma

11:35 pm in Modern Lighting, SixDW: A New Beginning by Lyn

Edoma is designed by h220430 to represent the permafrost currently in Siberia. Within the permafrost, Edoma is a layer of ice that is no less that 40 meters thick, which is approximately 131 feet.

h220430’s website states that the permafrost has begun to melt in recent years. A high-concentrate methane has been found within the permafrost, specifically in Edoma, which is 1000x the methane that exists within the Earth’s atmosphere. Once the Edoma begins melting, there are concerns that global warming will be a far more serious issue than it is now.

To create awareness of this issue and to broaden perspective towards our global environment, h220430 created the Edoma light to represent the Edoma ice. The Edoma light is an incandescent lamp that is slowly disappearing, with a faint light shining through the methane.

h220430 is a Japanese design team specializing in lighting and furniture.  Many of their products are environmentally related, with interesting stories behind them.

Leather Lampshade

leather-lampshade

The Leather Lampshades enable you to figuratively brighten your life while literally brightening up someone else’s. This is due to designer Pepe Heykoop’s collaboration with The Tiny Miracles Foundation. The Leather Lampshades are designed by 20 mothers living in Mumbai, India. Every Lampshade that is sold brings a donation of one month’s fees to a private English school so that the daughters of the 20 mothers can attend. Isn’t that inspirational?

leather-lamp2

Each of the Leather Lampshades are made from soft lambskin. Their shape is designed to replicate old industrial lamps. As seen in the two images, they are available in two different styles: vertical and horizontal.

To learn more about Leather Lampshades, Pepe Heykoop and the women and children that benefit from their purchase, check out Heykoop’s website at http://www.pepeheykoop.nl.

Twisted Lights

twisted-lamps

Designed by Erwin Zwiers, the Twisted Lights are unique, interestingly designed modern light fixtures.

Each light is handmade using bent plywood. The top part is constructed first and then the bent plywood is wrapped around the initial shape.

twisted2

On Zwier’s website, he describes the process:  “The flexibility of the material invites to make organic forms. The lamp is built from an initial shape, which is the top of the lamp. Against this top bend plywood is wrapped, so that during the construction of the lamp it will grow step by step. During this process the lamps are created. In advance it can not be determined what form eventually will come out.”

Using a similar technique, Erwin Zwiers also makes Twisted Bowls. For more information and to check out more of his work, have a look at his website at http://www.erwinzwiers.nl/.

Calmares I and Calmares II

10:52 pm in Modern Lighting, SixDW: A New Beginning by Lyn

Round and brilliant like the ball that will drop tomorrow night for New Years Eve, the Calmares I and Calmares II are unique modern light fixtures for your home.

Shown above, the Calmares I is a limited edition fixture of 15 pieces. The Calmares II, shown below, is of a larger limited edition run with 125 pieces. Both are designed by Strala, a design company owned by Tom Strala, an architect “who does not build houses, but tables, chairs and lighting.”

Both the Calmares I and the Calmares II are made from fluorescent tubes that are connected to form a spherical shape. The Calmares I is made of 73 connected tubes, while the Calmares II is made from 13. Each light is energy-efficient, as each consumes only 24 watts of energy.

Would you rather be celebrating New Years around the Calmares lamps than the ball in Times Square? To learn more about Calmares I and Calmares II, take a look at Strala’s website.

Dual Sphere Lighting

11:15 pm in Modern Lighting, SixDW: A New Beginning by Lyn

dual-sphere

Inspired the natural funghi in our environment, Swedish design company Note Design Studio created the Dual Sphere Lighting. With the inspiration taken from the notion that the funghi peeks out from “the dark undergrowth like small candles.”

Thus, the glass sphere of the lamp hovers over the wooden base. They are designed for low-energy bulbs, so the glass spheres are the same size as the wooden base. There are two sizes available – small and large. The larger lamps have a glass sphere made from hand-blown glass. The base is made from natural wood.

Note Design Studio is based out of Stockholm and specializes in interior design, product design, architecture, branding and design management.
