Light Ceremony

11:53 pm in Lighting, Lights by Long Tran

Absolutely love this project. Light Ceremony riffs off the proverbial tea ceremony by letting you add and remove light to a bowl via scoop. The two objects communicate wirelessly to seamlessly transfer light based on motion and gesture. A little novel yes, but certainly more interesting that an on/off switch.

Energizing Neighborhoods

11:46 pm in Lighting, Lights, Outdoor, Seating by Long Tran

How can design be used to change and improve perceptions about shared spaces? Project Energizing Neighborhoods is a strategic addition to a city’s ongoing narrative with its outdoor spaces, created by developing on the existing typology of a park bench. Now multi-functional, you can get your fitness on while you wait for the bus. The human generated power is stored to light the attached streetlamp.

Monocomplex

5:45 pm in Lighting, Lights by Long Tran

I’m always on the look out for new design talent and many of them are coming from groups, like Monocomplex from South Korea. These four young designers are creating new ideas in the realms of product design, furniture and lighting. Their collaborative efforts have created some of the most interesting modern pieces I’ve seen.

1. Icicle Lighting by Cho Jangwon
When winter comes, we can see icicles hanging. ICICLE lamp merges the functionality of a stool/table with a lamp.

2. Spool Lighting by Hwang Eunsang
I love the idea of a spool wrapped in string. And then there’s the idea of warmth associated from memories of moms and grannies sewing in the kitchen table. The illuminated aspect creates a beautiful silhouette.

3. Retro TV Lighting by Park Hyunwoo
This floor lamp takes the form of retro TV’s in Korea. It’s nostalgic yet refreshingly modern. I love the exposed structure – to see how each piece of wood connects to the other.

Traditional Korean Switches

4:04 pm in Electricity, Lights, Living by Chris-Burns

Whenever a bit of tiny design draws inspiration from gigantic architecture, it almost never goes wrong – and almost certainly goes so very right. This is an example that’s completely lovely. A light switch that draws inspiration from traditional Korean architecture (and clothing!) These switches (for electricity) are capable of not only switching the lights on and off, they can deliver detailed info about the energy usage of the room they’re installed in via free web or smartphone applications.

Temperature sensors, imaging equipment, and more are available additions to the “nanogrid” structure. That’s what this switch is called, nanogrid. It’s won an award, (see below,) chosen due to its superiority in form, environmental friendliness, usability, and how well the product relates to consumer needs. Well done!

This project is a 2010 Korea Presidential Good Design Award winner!

Electro Ambient Wall Coverings

4:03 pm in Lighting, Lights by Chris-Burns

Here’s something rather spectacular. A very simple concept when it comes down to it, a rather long explanation if you’d like to take the time to understand the intricacy. What you’ve got here is a project called Inconspicuous Matter, a project involving electro reactive wallpaper. What does that mean in a nutshell? Wallpaper that LIGHTS UP!

In an effort to visualize electrical energy flows, this project shows just that through responsive materials set up to be fabulous ambient displays, reacting to energy blasted through their veins, reacting with fabulous colors galore! This project takes material design and uses it to demand users attention (quite well I’d imagine) generating in them awareness. Awareness of what, you might ask? Well first the magical innovation displayed in this project, of course, look it’s amazing! Then in the actual visual flow or energy that’d otherwise be invisible. Feel free to read these paragraphs that act as a sort of manifesto behind this project, then take a peek at the gallery and video presentation below:

Design Rationale

Can the visualization of electrical energy flows lead to textile and material innovation?

Energy is an invisible and yet incredibly valuable resource. The ways in which we consume energy, and the amount that we use, is highly unsustainable and industries are now dealing with issues surrounding energy overconsumption, origins and uses. It is important that we consider not only how we are using energy, but also where it comes from. In a world driven by innovation but struggling with sustainable concerns, the emergence of research and applications available in clean energy resources is significant, but the use of it is still not really spread from industries to individuals. Moreover, considerable development of new energy resources or technologies to noticeably increase their production and uses would take several decades.1

In the domestic environment, electricity is the first named energy manifestation. However, hidden within the design of unappealing appliances and mechanisms that minimize energy’s real importance and significance, electrical energy access is, for most people, taken for granted. Moreover, because the current market in electronic / electric appliances for domestic environment promises convenience and comfort aplenty, saving energy is still seen as something negative that make everyday life less comfortable. 2

Interactive Electronic Jewelry

12:33 am in Lights by Chris-Burns

How would you like your bracelet display a bunch of text, the text you desire, the text you love? If Biju Neyyan is a designer who has some clout in the future, you can bet that this project, “eJOUX” will bring that functionality to your wrist and neck. This project consists of a Bluetooth device to which you upload your own specific design, animation, or functionality. One screen all around the band is what it is.

Turn it into a swish of blowing leaves, connect it to your music player and display text telling you the track or sound-activated animation, all of this on flexible screen technology. Welcome to the future, where someone can send you more than a message to your mobile phone – welcome to a future where electronically, your friend can send you a design you can wear instantly! Super fun. Do want.

Coral Lamp is Eco-Friendly to the Max But There’s No Nemo and Dory Around

1:11 am in Eco Friendly, Lamp, Lamps & Lighting, Lights by chris

We have recently shown you a concept lamp based on birds made out of hands but with no actual birds in it and today we found a Coral Lamp, a lighting solution that will remind you about the beauty of the ocean and the endangered species the corals can offer housing to. But, just like with the Birds in Hand lamp design that lacked any birds, there's no actual fish shape here either. The Coral Lamp is made of glass and comes with solar panels on board capable of harvesting precious energy from the Sun that will make them glow at night in pretty colors. I bet this soothing light would surely attract Nemo's, but mostly Dory's attention as it's not every day that we get to see a lit up, eco-friendly coral that doesn't have ulterior motives, do we?. Pink Horror Lamp Shade Lampshade Is Ideal For Halloween

2:09 am in Lamps & Lighting, Lights, holidays by Tanya

We all heart Halloween but at times end up buying something very cheesy or garish. The Pink Horror Lamp Shade Lampshade not only makes for the perfect Halloween decor but given its classic design can be used on regular days as well. Inspired by the cult movie "Night of the Living Dead", the lampshade is a must for any Horror fan who wants to add a touch bizarre in their house without being macabre. This shade has a slip-UNO fitter (sit on the socket and held in place by the bulb) and supports European E14 and American E12 table lamp bases such as Ikea's Grundton, Hemma, Ekarp and Januari etc. You can purchase the Lampshade from the Etsy website.

3D TulipK Lamp Was Made Using Microsoft Excel!

6:28 am in Lamps, Lamps & Lighting, Lights by Tanya

Microsoft is not very well received in the design community as its no secret that most design professional fancy anything that falls from the Apple tree. However product designer Ben Geebelen uses something as dull as Microsoft Excel to come up with something as gorgeous as the TulipK Lamp. This stunning piece of lighting is a result of Selective Laser Sintered in polyamide which in english means that the pattern was designed in Excel and the file in 3-matic.The shade has 6 tulip petals surrounding the light bulb and the designer used a spread sheet to determine the locations of all 2374 holes punching through one petal.
