Wonsang Lee’s twist on the espresso machine appears ultra-modern, but takes inspiration from traditional Korean houses which are often designed to focus on exposure to outdoor landscaping. Like the traditional homes, the center of this design is where all the magic happens. Its open midsection is not only aesthetically unique, but an intuitive signal for where the user should place their mug.
Designer: Wonsang Lee

The word ‘kettle’ itself has a sort of antiquated, old-school ring to it, doesn’t it? With this in mind, designer Felipe Arnador redesigned the classic Braun brand kettle to appeal to the younger user. Its sleek appearance is made possible by a double surface layer that produces a vacuum between the interior and exterior, keeping the user’s hand safe from heat and eliminating the need for a handle.

Looking for the perfect marriage between a digital scale, measuring cup and a mixing bowl? Your search ends with this awesome SmartMix! A notch up from the SmartMeasure Cup, this mixing bowl allows you to add and weigh ingredients both by volume and by weight, while preparing the recipe. The scale allows you to convert between the most common units, and tip in the elements with accuracy. Best of all, you can detach the bowl for easy cleaning and stow it separately. Superb!

Well… almost everything! This innovative mobile cooking concept provides a compact, all-in-one solution for preparing meals when there is no access to a kitchen. Made from a special shape-memory alloy, all utensils can be stored flat without losing their functionality. A great solution for catering teams, chefs, or business travelers who’d rather make their own meals than dine out when they’re away from home.

So how about this, a chopping board that features strategic slits. Why? So that you can use the same board as an impromptu colander and rinse out the veggies without any fuss! Very helpful and a easy to store, this simplistic board is made with polypropylene, which is flexible and skid-proof.
Filter Plate is a 2011 red dot design concept winner.

The Afrodite aims at igniting passion with its range of sensual cookware. Based on the idea that food cooked with love and passion is a personal representation of us, it looks at delving into a journey filled with discovering pleasure in a unique way. Homage to the Greek goddess of love and beauty, the set is a refreshing new approach to culinary bliss.
- Afrodite is made of three elements thought both for cooking and tasting to create a unique experience of playfulness, complicity, intimacy and Eros.
- Afrodite jug (pot), Afrodite pan and Afrodite spoon (little saucepan for interactive, sensual games).
- Afrodite accessories: Mr Championglove (potholder for him inspired by boxing gloves), Lady Seductiveglove (inspired by the elegant and feminine gloves of the ’30s) and What’s Inside, potholder with a pocket where you can insert dinner invitations or love notes.
- The Lovers, Mr. Fork and Miss Spoon, a set of cutlery inspired by the contrasting shapes of the sinuous curves of the female body with those of a more tense and vigorous masculine shape.
- The collection is completed with a recipe book indexed by moods to create magical atmospheres and satisfy different cravings. Each mood allows the preparation of an entire course based on aphrodisiac ingredients.
- Containers in die-cast aluminum allow seductive curves, in combination with Bakelite handles for more tense forms.
- A precious chromatic color way was chosen for Afrodite: Gold Dionysus; a combination of the intoxicating shades of red wine with the preciousness of golden honey; the nectar of the gods.

Cleaning a whisk can be a challenge, especially if you are working with a sticky mixture or thick dough. Divisible is a clever design that addresses this issue, as well as the storage. The whisk simple splits in half, straightening the curvy wires and facilitating easy cleaning. By far the most hygienic cleaning solution, demonstrated brilliantly in the accompanying video.
Divisible is a 2011 red dot design concept winner.

Disturbed by the way their ninety-year-old ‘Nan’ has to struggle in her current kitchen scenario, Product Tank has designed this compatible Kitchen 02. It’s compatible in the sense that both the sliver generation and the young-guns can use it easily. Like they say, “This is not a Kitchen for a Michelin starred chef, just an old lady who wants to remain independent and cook herself simple meals.”
Features:
- The kitchen is small to reduce the amount of movement between areas.
- Everything has been designed so that tasks can be performed sitting down.
- You can get your legs under the sink to make washing up and preparing food easier.
- The sink has a shelf to rest things on whilst you clean them and a moveable divider to split the sink into two areas so you can wash up and still have a vegetable prep area.
- You can remove the divider to have one large sink capable of fitting an oven tray.
- The prep area is recessed so that if there is a spillage, anyone sat down won’t get wet and all spillages can be swept into the sink to make cleaning easier.
- There are two boilers.
- To use one, you simply engage the plug and fill with water directly from the tap.
- The boiler eliminates the need for carrying heavy pans full of water and the risk of pans tipping over, especially when sat down.
- Sensors in the sides prevent the boiler from being overfilled or boiling dry.
- A light cage holds and drains the food being cooked, or the boilers can be used as steamers.
- The boilers are easy to clean and trash eaters take care of any loose bits of food. Taking pots and pans out of the equation is not only a safety feature, but also reduces the amount of storage needed.
- The controls are angled to make them easy to read and it’s easy to see if they have been left on from a distance.
- The dials are easy to grip and the numbering is high contrast.
- A bold graphic makes it easy to see which dial relates to which cooking element, without having to look at small awkward diagrams.
- This model includes a frying plate and an induction hob for soups and sauces.
- These elements are plug and play and can be quickly changed for a variety of options and easily removed for cleaning.

hotspot / breakfast is an excellent way to pamper yourself or a loved one. The setup is a fully functional breakfast tray with components like a toaster, a kettle and an espresso pot; all designed with a classic touch. Too bad it didn’t hit the market during this past Valentine’s week. It sure would have made many of us ladies happy…. being served breakfast in bed!
As Stefan explains, “The design is handle-free, with simplified forms and invisible technology. The technology is based on carbon nanotubes (CNT) integrated in the plastic so that parts of the body itself become a heating element and therefore function very energy-efficiently. The power is supplied by power interfaces on a base plate on which the devices are mounted, using the same principle as electric kettles. Recessed grips on the sides of the base plate reveal its additional function as a tray and make it easy to pick up.”

The Wavy Tea Set isn’t just nice to look at- the layers and unique organic form are purposed as such that each fits naturally and comfortably in the user’s hand. The alternative “handle” design was inspired by the process of glass blowing and captures the pulling action of hot glass being formed.
