Purple Perfection

12:15 am in Interior Design by Katie

While browsing through Pinterest, I found that first image of plush purply goodness. I’m seriously in so love with that sofa that I can’t stop staring at it. Is that wrong? It’s so plush it looks fake! And it’s soooo purple.

So anyway, that pin lead me to the portfolio to Drake Design Associates. And the rest of the home, in the Flatiron district of New York City, is just as gorgeous. I’ve included a few images, but you can see more in their portfolio.

The use of color – mainly the purple (would you call it fushcia?) – is beautiful. And I love the colorful, geometric artwork. Especially those stripes. Such a classic and bold way to bring in more colors.

So, what do you think about all this purple?

Sensual Interior Design: The Shade Club

3:29 pm in Interior Design by Troy Turner

SquareONE’s latest renovation, located in the basement of a residential building in the center of Bucharest, was once home to some of  the most successful and downright sexy clubs of the 90s, some of which carried a notorious and even dark past. After 5 years of vacancy the Shade Club has opened its doors to reveal a sultry modern design that reflects the scandalous history of the venue.

At the start of the remodel, the design team noticed 7 to 8 layers of material applied to the walls, giving them a peek into the location’s history, and sparking their interest in its mysterious past.

The first of the 3 defined spaces within the club is also the largest and features a high density of structural pillars. By covering the pillars in mirrors and applying three-quarter lamps across two edges on each, the columns seem to disappear and a “forest of lamps” emerge. The volumetric pattern on the surrounding walls is CNC dense polyurethane foam painted white. Behind the pattern are mirrors that continue the visual effect of the mirrored pillars.

The second space is a circular room that surrounds the central lounge. Given the shape, the designers opted for an organic design that incorporated baroque decoration. The single row of structural pillars were covered in a Corian skin. It is a soft, organic shape vertically extruded. The Corian skin was engraved with the graphic design CNC milled into the surface of the material, then a special mold was made and the Corian milled plates were thermoformed. The semicircular bar in the this space was done exactly the same. The walls have a routed MDF structure, and thin, extremely flexible Axpet cladding to which graphic designs were cut and applied on the surface.

The third and smallest space is quite isolated from the rest, and features handmade graphic designs on the walls and a single lounge. Hovering above the lounge is a  ellipsoidal light membrane on the ceiling made of a elastic membrane that diffuses the light. To polish the look the designers used white fringe to better illustrate the shape and link the two elements.

In the bar areas there are virtual sections that cut the volume and leave white luminous surfaces with 2D images of different objects (lamps, tables and other household furniture). The ideea was to illustrate a photo of the interior of a house that cuts out volume and leaves an impression. To contrast the space the designers used Corian Noir in combination with translucent Glacier Ice Corian. Spectral tubes were then used as light sources to illuminate the white surfaces.

I’d Kill for this Office

3:01 pm in Architecture, Interior Design by Troy Turner

Industrial/product design consultants No Picnic have outdone themselves with their new office/studio in downtown Stockholm. Enjoying the highest level of historical protection, the 19th century buildings required that architect Elding Oscarson be super meticulous about conservation, even down to each new screw hole. The result is a 21st century office with bright and creative interior design that also displays the structural materials of the building while owning its unique imperfections. The studio features a striking customer area that is distinctly separate from the creative spaces to help maintain secrecy. The workshop areas are open and full of natural light. The clever use of mirrors helps expand areas that would otherwise lack square footage and provides a symmetrical solution to the abnormally placed mezzanine.

Inspired by Fire

3:02 pm in Interior Design by Troy Turner

When an accidental fire wiped out the greater part of this Parisian loft, the owner of 10 years didn’t get down… he got inspired. Designer Frederic Flanquart accepted the challenge of redefining what was left of the existing elements into what you see now: a creative, open, and inviting space. While the lines are sometimes geometrically irregular, the utilization of natural light is anything but random, and each, in their own respect, helps highlight every detail of the loft.

True Hospital Comfort Zone

4:03 pm in Furniture, Interior Design, Living, Seating by Chris-Burns

If you’ve been unfortunate to have been in any hospital in our modern world for a long stay, you know it can be an awful experience. Not just because of quality of service, but because of environment, because a hospital is a sterile place where the only fun you should be having is on your way out the door. Designer Sara Tejareh aims to change all that with the power of the soul.

Soul power goes a long way, but this is an industrial design blog, and we want something physical! Therefor I must say that a whole large relaxation area such as the one Sara Tejareh is presenting here would end up being an absolutely invaluable addition to any hospital in the world – as Tejareh says, the power of soul can cheer up your heart even when the rest of your body is failing you – and being in a relaxing arena of pillows and bright colors will do nothing but help in making that power a reality. Mind healing to the rescue.

Narnia-like Secret Game Room Is a Great Gift Idea For Your Kids

9:19 am in Concept, Design, Interior Design, Kids, Kids & Nursery Furniture, Modern Furniture, Modern Furniture & Design by chris

In case you have children then you have probably watched the Narnia adventures a bunch of times already and in case you are planning to have kids at some point, then you'll surely watch it a lot too. But what you haven't probably done yet is to build a secret game room based on the Narnia movie. As you can see in the images below the closet there looks like a simple closet but it is actually a magic portal to another universe, the perfect room for your kids to play in. This do-it-yourself project seems pretty easy to make although you'd probably need to redesign a bunch of rooms of your current home in order to bring the Narnia universe to your children. In case this gift idea, although great, sounds too complicated then you'll have to figure a different way to offer them a piece of Narnia. Via Dornob

5:16 am in Architecture, Chairs, Chairs & Bar Stools, Interior Design, Modern Chairs by Tanya

Las Vegas, the city of sin, indulgence and drunken soirees just got a new hotel and spa located bang in the middle of the new "City Center". The Vdara Hotel & Spa has been designed for the global traveller but its their Silk Road Restaurant that has caught our attention. Designed by the inimitable Karim Rashid, the restaurant is a rich melange of lush colors, eclectic aesthetics and contemporary furniture. The seating in particular deserves a special mention since it plays off beautifully with the given space. The Eboll chairs are from design seat firm Capdell and the chairs are comfortable, luxurious and oh so hip. A total of 178 Eboli chairs by Cadpdell have been installed in the Silk Road Hotel and the chairs correctly highlight the emerging design dynamism creeping in Vegas hotels.

Bench #13 Is Made of Concrete and Wood

10:57 pm in Chairs & Bar Stools, Design, Interior Design, Modern Design, Outdoor Furniture, Patio & Outdoor Furniture, Wood by chris

The bench in the images below, Bench #13, is combining two simple design elements, concrete and wood, and could be used as a seating solution in a variety of places from public locations, such as parks, to personal homes, whether for interior purposes or as a modern piece of outdoor furniture. The combination of wood and concrete is unique, and the Bench #13 itself is surely going to be appreciated by your guests or those bystanders looking for a place to rest during their short lunch breaks. But what I'd be really interested to find out is what really happened to Bench number #1 to #13, and what materials were used to build those. Via Niko Yektai
