It’s amazing to think that cardboard chairs can win design awards, but it has happened. This product is called “Vouwwow” which when translated means “wow it folds”. This chair won the Mart Stam Thonet award for best design. It was created by Dutch designers Maartje Nuy and Joost van Noort. Via.

The two-tone wood look hearkens back to Dutch design specially the combination of white and natural colors. The striking element in the “Oriade” bedroom furniture set is the wood finish. Called butternut, the wood has distinct vein marks which give it strong visual appeal as light to dark browns are streaked together in the wood grain. In this black sectional sofa, Leolux takes away some of the back rest to create a more contemporary design. It opens the look of the furniture entirely making the room appear more open and less subject to the standard shapes associated with a boxy sectional sofa. There are a lot of science fiction fans out there and for those this may be a dream come true. This custom office desk was created by Tom Spina Designs who does commission work in a variety of subjects including movie nostalgia. For our urban living friends, we often hear the complaints of having very limited space despite a great geographical location. That is why I was excited to see this small room furniture concept created by Isis Design of Germany. It appears as a normal size box that is attractively finished in white. When opened the box becomes a bed and sitting area giving new meaning to the word “stow away bed”. Hopefully, this product will be on the market in the near future. Via and the design blog.

Will Holman is an architecture student working in a post graduate program at Rural Studio in Newbern, Alabama. Will provided some pop art home furnishings that are available from his Etsy store here. The first is the “Foreclosure Fruit Bowl” fittingly adapted from a real estate “For Sale” sign. The second piece is the “Nine Square Chair” that is shaped from an everyday site in my city, a road construction sign in orange. Prices: Fruit Bowl – $55; Chair – $300.

This simple lamp won the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in March 2009 for its clever design. It is called the “LED Lamp”. This desk lamp is turned off and on using a concealed sensor at the base of the lamp. Perhaps the most amazing quality is how the lights themselves were so well blended into the thin strip of wood in the lamp’s arm. The end result is more like a wooden sculpture rather than a traditional lamp design. More information can be found here.
