Plants Love Your Leftovers

4:01 pm in food by Troy Turner

To many, the idea of starting a compost pile seems like a daunting task. Few of us have large enough outdoor areas or the time and patience to manage. The Nepenthes planter provides a smaller, cleaner way of recycling organics and growing your own food. Simply place your leftovers down the hatch and let the bacteria do the rest. Nutrients will be released back into the soil where they can be used by plants. No need to worry about the smell, a built in carbon filter ensures the planter stays smelling fresh.Kinda looks like a carnivorous pitcher plant!

Brick Lego Homes!

5:13 pm in Outdoor, Storage, food by Radhika-Seth

I love this concept of turning food relief packets to something useful, especially if used in disaster struck areas. The idea is to bundle food (rice) and water into this brick-like module, which can later be used to build temporary shelters. Thanks to their Lego inspired shape, the UNICEF Brick structures promise to be sturdy as temporary shanties.

Plate Watches What You Eat

11:59 pm in Dining, food by Long Tran

What if there was a way to make food intake more visual and track all of it? What if there was a way to embed data directly in food? Printable RFID tags will replace barcodes on food packaging, enabling this concept called Nutrismart. A plate reads out our food and works as an invisible diet management system. When placing a cupcake on the plate, it’s scanned by an RFID reader inside the plate. Feedback can be sent to a computer or mobile device where one can witness an infographic of sorts about their eating habits.

Concrete Plates

3:01 pm in Dining, food by Troy Turner

Two of my favorite materials: concrete and wood. What’s not to love about these concrete plates by Nir Meiri. Albeit, they have got to be heavy… but nobody’s talking about throwing out the china. No matter the food displayed, it is sure to provide the perfect accent, completing the combination of textures and natural colors. Just tell your Greek brother in-law to be careful where he’s smashing plates with this one. OPA!!

Open Sesame!

11:32 pm in food by Radhika-Seth

Owning a personal refrigerator at work is not a new thing, and Particulate Food Fridge fits into that lifestyle perfectly. Only thing different is the way it looks; seems more like a lunchbox than a mini fridge. Functionally, it has these compartments that come up, grab your offering and store each according to the food groups. Check out the way the mouth of the fridge opens up; ready to devour its next meal!

Gravity Assisted Food Prep

10:40 pm in Kitchen, food by Long Tran

GRAVITY represents a shift away from processed packaged foods, towards healthy raw ingredients and making your own meals. The objective is to help children adopt improved eating habits and attitudes towards nutrition at a young age so they are able to maintain a healthy diet in later life. Its mix and measure system facilitates new experiences with food, educates about common preparation methods, ingredients and practices. Combining separate ingredients through gravity assisted mixing is a novel approach to baking or cooking for the child.

The ingredients in the cup drop into the bowl through an intuitive twist action. The twisting form of the cups is a visual cue alluding to a twist interaction. Incorporating elements of play, the bowl can be mixed actively by spinning or shaking on a curved base. The advantage is in the ability for parent and child to measure, mix and test food combinations together, ensuring experimentation and exploration with food as a joint activity. The ability to measure an ingredient before combining into a mixing bowl teaches the child about portion size and quantity.

Gravity Food Preparation System is a James Dyson ADA Entry.

Balls of Farming Fury

4:03 pm in food by Chris-Burns

Designer Prithu Paul has quite a treat in store for you here. It’s a tractor of the imagination, one like you’ve never seen before, one made to work on the farm in ways we can’t fully imagine – because this is a tractor for the future farmer. Designed to work in the year 2020 AD, this tractor will work on an Earth in turmoil, one with “searing daytime temperatures” and harsh climate conditions for all. Hydrogen fuel based engines and embedded Nano systems rule the day, and a need arises for the common farmer to reprise his and her role.

This tractor works in a world that needs large scale seeding to be done in an extreme weather environment. SMART farming is no longer just a pleasant concept, it’s an absolute REQUIREMENT as the entire human race depends on it. This tractor goes by the name Deuterium, its name coming from the metaphor “heavy water” or D2O. This auto must be both powerful and stable and able to function to the utmost. Behold a list of specifics is here provided by the designer:

FEATURES
1. Multiple degrees of freedom in motion and body positioning
2. Onboard CPU, GPRS and sensor controlled motion path allocation for autonomous farming
3. Embedded NANO Solar Cells on the FRP body surface panels for harnessing solar energy
4. Strategic 360 degree light and Night Vision camera feed for 24 hour usability
5. Detach and deploy Roller Bots for topographic assessment, navigation and data collection
6. Vacuum Power Suction at the rear for pulling heavy farm equipment and ploughing tools
7. Retractable and expandable axial shift mechanism for adjusting ground clearance and length
8. Heavy traction tires in the front rather than back with a singular rear axis
9. Ergonomic interiors, central ingress and egress for manual operations
10. Increased degree of freedom along a path due to front wheel shift feature
11. Hydrogen fuel cells for almost no problem of heavy and cumbersome diesel engines
12. A multi dimensional tractor for the future farmer

Eating Vegan: Green Living Plus All the Healthy Side Effects

7:33 am in Green Living, Health, Natural, Organic, food by Katie Nielsen

A vegan diet is one that excludes the consumption of any animal products, including meat, eggs, and dairy products. In addition, some vegans also do not consume any foods processed using animal products (for instance, bone char is often used in processing refined white sugar). Vegan diets tend to be inherently green, since they rely heavily [...]

Why Brown-Bagging It to Work is Better for You & the Environment

6:27 am in Green Living, food by Katie Nielsen

Packing a lunch for work every day may seem a bit tedious but the advantages of doing so far outweigh those of eating out daily. For starters, it can save you a ton of money. Back when I had a traditional 9-to-5 office job (I now work from home), I would eat out on average three [...]
