Earless Mug

As funny as the name might sound, the Earless Mug is a clever and functional twist on the everyday object that coffee addicts will appreciate! Instead of a handle (or “ear”), the design incorporates space to rest the spoon so it doesn’t poke the user in the face when drinking and eliminates the need for a saucer. Space-saving, stackable, and material-conscious, it goes to show that even the most simple of objects can be hybridized for practical improvement!

Ukraine based designer, Max Ptk, has imagined a dining room uncluttered with extra things like chair legs and table bases. At least, thats the illusion this beautifully conceived dining room set gives off. Made of tempered glass and wood, the “Rauma Collection” makes a boldly minimal statement, while at the same time confusing far-sighted family pets.

Italian glassware studio Memento blurs the boundaries between handcrafted-workmanship and large scale production with their latest project called “ME IN A GLASS.” By manipulating colored vitreous paste, experienced craftsmen master each phase of the complex glass-making process, playing with colors and bringing about an extremely personal palette of 25 matchless glass sets with inspiration from sushi to dubstep.

In order to guarantee this uniqueness, the products are trapped, like rare and precious crystal, in vacuum packs and inserted into an exclusive package which conveys the mood that inspired them.

The Salt & Pepper Slides are a modern, elegant twist on classic shakers that were designed around the idea that contents could gently slide out versus being shaken out. A small capsule in the center holds the pepper or salt which are easily & intuitively distributed by simply lifting the upward tail of the S-shaped shaker.

Visionary Cooking Experience

The Whirlpool Fireplace cooking experience combines the tradition of gathering around the fire with modern tech. The story is built on the concept of cooking with light, where different frequencies of light are used to either create a warm atmosphere or to cook different types of food. The central basin is filled with light pins for cooking & an intelligent interactive table surface that keeps food/drinks hot or cold. The intuitive interface with gestural controls adds to the overall sensorial experience.

The Tea Cup SlingsHOT

I never realized that dealing with a tea bag was so frustrating! Admittedly, I’m also more of a coffee drinker… but I can still see why the SlingsHOT Tea Cup is appealing. The slit in the handle keeps the tag from falling in and allows the user to squeeze the liquid out of the soaked bag simply by pulling back as you would a slingshot. Just be careful not to pop yourself in the eye!

Clever Cutlery

It’s a sporkife! No wait… a knoork??  Whatever it is, this curious-looking cutlery design was created with respect to the logical order in which people might eat their food. The hybrid spoon/knife/fork is first used as a spoon to consume side dishes before being broken at the perforation to form a separate knife and fork for cutting protein items. While the disposable object is still made of plastic, it generates less waste than other plastic cutlery sets.

In a world of fast food and quick meals, it’s easy to lose sight of the age-old tradition of family time over dinner. Purpose Plates are a clever reminder of this valuable experience and aim to bring us back together by introducing a playful game written directly on the dishes. Point the arrow of the top plate at the person you want to talk to and match it with the phrases of the bottom plate to create conversation-starting sentences. It’s an educational and playful way to get families talking again!

3D Food Printing?!

The 3d printing industry has been transformed from a handful of manufacturers producing costly machines, to hundreds of individuals creating their own machines and sharing the instructions on how to make them. The incredible accessibility to this technology has the potential to affect many aspects of our daily lives, including how we think about food. What if instead of street hot dog stands we had 3D food printer carts?! This twist on the classic food cart sheds light on the future of this awesome tech.

The printer here creates what I’m guessing are simple chocolate confections, but this just scrapes the surface of what these machines might be capable of in the way of food!

Musical Dinner

Imagine a future where food is inspired by music. I am talking about the SmartPlate, a dish that understands food and transforms it into sound. As described by Julian, it completes the circle of senses by which we understand what we eat. The plate hookes up wirelessly to your mobile device, and then by measuring the different aspects of your ingredients, it identifies food. It then precisely attaches musical notes, harmonies and rhythm to each ingredient.

Essentially the user can listen, compose and interact with recipes of sound!

Electrolux SmartPlate is a 2012 Electrolux Design Lab Top Ten finalist entry.

Ah, Refreshed!

With an aim to provide a fuller sensory experience, The Refresh was designed to act as a portable device that instantly cools your beverage. Essentially this means no more warm diet coke! Keeping up with the theatrics of good design, the appliance helps form a light condensation, followed by an enticing mist that envelopes the beverage bottle. Using advanced thermoelectric technology, the electric current causes the internal semiconductor nodes to instantly freeze.

As the designer explains, after the beverage is cooled Refresh converts the excess energy back into its rechargeable battery.

Materials: Clear coat stainless steel over an icy blue frosted glass which creates a smooth, cold and refreshing feel.

Magnet Magic

If you haven’t taken a spill while carrying a tray of food, it’s probably safe to say that you’ve at least had some close calls! Designed with this in mind, the Magic Tray uses magnetic force to keep everything in place. When carried, magnets in the tray attract magnets embedded in the dishes to keep them stable. Setting the tray down breaks the magnetic attraction so the dishes can be picked up easily. Hit the jump to see how it works!
