Split Table

4:35 pm in Desk, Furniture, Table, office by Troy Turner

At first sight the Split Table seems to be like any other, but take a closer examination and you’ll see there are no nuts, bolts or glue. The table is held together only by tension and flexibility between its plywood pieces. The functional joints is as much a part of the aesthetic as it is the construction. Best of all, you can own the limited series table here!

Designed specifically for Apple products, this table by designer Sebastian Lara features a cleft, angled indention that supports and charges your iPod, iPhone or iPad. Furnishings on Fire

4:02 pm in Desk, Furniture, Led, Lighting, Shelves, Shelving, Table by Troy Turner

While LED light is energy efficient and long lasting, it can also be hard to look at! With this in mind, Estudi Arola’s BlancoWhite series of table-top bookcases, shelving and wall lamps feature hidden strips of LED that are focused toward the center of each piece, creating a warm, indirect glow that won’t blind the viewer. It’s a versatile collection that’s as beautiful in the dark as it is in the light.

Pieces in the series consist of thin metal casings, 1 cm thick, that house sheets of methacrylate on two sides to accommodate the LED light strips. The internal surface of each sheet is woven with micro incisions by laser that are more subtle on the edges and deeper toward the center to achieve a plane with a certain concavity that is lit evenly.

Irreducible Simplicity

4:01 pm in Desk, Furniture, Table by Troy Turner

Invisible City’s premier collection of handmade furniture, Incunabular, begins with this interesting tripodal side table that designer Simon Moorhouse describes as having “irreducible simplicity.” The collection is handmade in southeast England and blends traditional craftsmanship with innovative modern design presented in high quality and sustainably sourced walnut, ash, or oak.

Adidas’ New Sporty Office

3:01 pm in Architecture, Desk, Furniture, office by Troy Turner

I thought my office was cool until I saw the exterior of Adidas’ new corporate headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany. The part that really stung though, was seeing the interior… thanks to the design team at KINZO, I now officially hate my office!! The new working environment features a custom, sporty, and functional furniture system they like to call “WORKOUT” … a perfect name considering the design is purely Adidas in both form and function. Hit the jump to see for yourself!

Office Supplies with a Twist

3:15 pm in Desk, office by Troy Turner

I love a design that not only puts a twist on the unsurprising aesthetic of its predecessors but also adds fun functionality to rid items of their mundane stereotypes. The REconstruction kit of desktop accessories does just that! The concrete (you heard me) stapler, calculator, tape dispenser and pen holder are not just formed from an unconventional material, but present an additional fun function to transform overlooked tasks like stapling and taping from tedious to entertaining.

Stapler- make your mark! The user can choose from a number of facial expression characters to impress on the paper. Together, the impression face mark and staple form a complete face.

Calculator- music you create! This calculator records the order of the buttons the user has pressed. To play, the user simply presses the play button and the calculator will play a song based on the input.

Tape Dispenser- reminding you take a break! The wheel has six symbols representing “break-time” that roll as tape is taken by user. A triangle target points to which kind of a break the user should take.

Pen holder- consisting of two parts, holder and little figure eraser on the top surface, the eraser jumps out randomly when the user puts the pen inside the holder, surprising the user with each jump.

Romantic Magnetism in Light

4:13 pm in Design, Desk, Lamp, Lighting by Radhika-Seth

GEO Magnetic is quite an awesome lamp as far as design thinking goes. The basic lamp is a halo of light that glides up and down a steel rail, using magnetic attraction. The base halo holds a ball shape switch that looks suspended but is held in place using a fine thread. There are three levels of illumination and the electric current flowing into each section varies in intensity, this allows the spherical switch to shift its position to on/off.

Besides being a desk lamp, the GEO Magnetic doubles up as a romantic moodlight when the light halo is glided closer to the base.

Compact, Minimalist Desk

11:38 pm in Desk, Furniture by Long Tran

DEX is a compact, minimalist desk that fits anywhere in the home. The frame consists of two horizontal cross shapes of solid wooden laths and a drawer unit. The frame has a minimal presence around the seat for optimal comfort. The drawer unit has two or three drawers. They can be pulled out entirely to provide a place for a printer. I’m liking the design but something about it feels very juvenile, don’t you think?
