Does it really matter how you tape your boxes shut? Not really, unless you add some cool hinges to the design, or go off-center like how I usually do. But if you are perfectionism personified, then you must really crave for neatness while sealing stuff. So how about the Center Tape? I know you’ll really dig it!
Center Tape is a 2011 red dot design concept winner.

Socket Like Brick allows you to configure and create a modular multi tap as per convenience. Extend or remove modules safely, moreover accommodate the different sized plugs with ease. It basically provides a good solution to the managing devices; my only fear is that people shouldn’t go overboard with the configurations. Maybe if one of the modules can be a circuit breaker that indicates overload. What do you think?

When redesigning my house front door, we actually went through the discussion of peephole placement. While most of my family members are tall enough for standard placement, my mother-in-law and daughter are not. I wish I had chanced upon this creatively designed “Who is out there” peephole back then! It is such a simple solution to the age-old problem of how children or adults can safely open the door by seeing who is on the other side.

Smart Fridgerator is the mother of all smart fridges! It keeps the goodies ultra cool and conserves energy, but don’t they all? So what is the deal behind this concept; for starters, it has eyes! Yes two strategically placed pin cameras that keep a track of what is stored in each compartment, so that when you want an apple, you know exactly which door to open. Why all the fuss; to keep doors shut and conserve as much energy as possible. Also to make you look cool with a Jetson-esque appliance which features a touch panel, recipe options and smartphone connectivity.

A show of hands please, all those of you dreading shoveling the sidewalk this winter! It’s quite a task and the toll it takes on your wrists … the less said the better. Xovel is an ergonomically modified shovel that promises to be easy on your body. It comes with a double-grip handle at the neck so that the forces are distributed in a more balanced and effective way. An integrated torchlight in the arm is quite a thoughtful addition. Snow on sidewalks, here I come!

When you are changing batteries in your remote control, one of the primary concerns is to make sure that they don’t roll off the table and fall down. This may sound like a comic situation right now, however it happens to almost every one of us. So is coming up with a hexagonal shape the answer; is Hive the answer to this problem? According to the designers, Hive’s unique shape make them roll-safe and save a lot on packaging and shelf space. I believe there is a reason why those AA’s are round, if there were merit to the hexagon, Duracell and the likes would have picked up on it. What do you think?

Cuptea is a delightful integration of a disposable cup and teabag packaging. Basically the cover of the teabag blooms into a beautiful disposable cup for tea. No doubt the packaging is a bit elaborate for a simple cup of chai, but I see this more from the ‘love of design’ point of view. I recently witnessed a marketing strategy for an eminent coffee brand, where they went door to door with a hot cuppa brew for select few winners. Place that kind of strategy versus this teacup kind of thoughtful brand integration. Hands down the latter makes a lasting impression.

Coming from a country where tea is not so much of a ceremonial process but just a necessity of life, concepts involving the right amount of steeping and fussing amuse me no end. Adding to my list of fascinating tea stories is the Fusioon Spoon Concept, where an appropriate niche holds the green teabag for centralized dipping, so that it receives an equal amount of water from all sides. The clever design also takes care of the used bag efficiently. Maybe it’s time I acquired some international tea drinking skills, or maybe I should just stick to instant coffee!

Concept X is a conceptual bracelet designed to create jewelry that mixes sensual organic forms with the strength of industrial, almost medical silhouettes. Its curvilinear body and undulating elements form a cincture-like cast – as if it naturally evolved there. The designers believe the evolutionary organic image fits well into modern life. They describe their project as “the re-definition of the spatial order of jewelry”.
Shaped by the pioneering technique of CNC/SLA, the bracelet is cut and welded and then hand-finished to seal the surface and produce a dull galvanized effect.
