In The Mood for Some Mid-Century Mod

12:44 am in Mid-Century Modern, decor by Katie

Today I’m feeling a mid-century modern kinda vibe. I’m not quite sure, but it may or may not be because of the Matthew Broderick / Ferris Bueller commerical from the Super Bowl. You know, because of Cameron’s house!

I’m drawn to mid-century design that focuses more on the modern, not the type of MCM decor that is frozen in time. Which is why I’m loving the mid-century home shown above.

Located in Salt Lake City, it has all of my dream MCM qualities: classic architecture with updated materials and appliances. Can’t you just see yourself entertaining with dinner and pool parties all the time at this home? Plus, it has the perfect pool house that can be your own private cabana. Head over to Move Modern to check out the rest of the home – it’s a must-see!

What are your feelings on mid-century modern decor?

Valentine’s Day Decor

1:18 am in decor by Katie

Valentine’s Day is just a little bit less than two weeks away and it’s popping up in my mind. I always think about doing something fun and putting together a nice table, dinner, desserts, etc and then I get lazy. So maybe if I start now, I’ll have it all together by February 14th.

To get myself in gear, I rounded up some Valentine’s Day tables and displays for some inspiration. Maybe I’ll search for some printables to make things a bit easier!

What about you? Do you have anything up your sleeve for V-day??

Comfort or style?

11:55 pm in Space, decor by Shellie

Do you have to sacrifice comfort for style? While many people think so, you certainly do not! Some rooms make you feel comfortable as soon as you enter them, this has a lot to do with not only how soft the furniture is or the choice of decor but the placement as well.

Choosing Your Furniture

Although a trip to the flea market may find you a fabulous end table you can refinish or the perfect garden statue you have been looking for, there are some pieces that you don’t want to skimp on like your sofa or bed. You are not required to break the bank on these purchases but you certainly should make sure that they fill your needs as far as comfort and style go. One quality investment piece can go a long way in a room!

Consider Placement

Before you buy that stunning sofa or dining room table, it is a good idea to take measurements in the showroom or use those that are provided online and map out where that piece of furniture will go in your room. You can lay down a rope outline, use rolled towels or whatever else you have handy, just make sure that it fits your space. An item that is not the appropriate size can cause a room to become uncomfortable quite quickly.

The ideal home where people want to gather is stylish and comfortable, you can easily achieve this by thinking through your choices and making sure that they fit the room properly.

Modern Frangrance Holder

4:01 pm in Home, Home Accessories, decor by Troy Turner

When I think of potpourri I can’t help but think of decorative wooden bowls and sheer fabric sachets in country houses, but this potpourri vessel puts an industrial twist on the classic with steel mesh sides and supporting cedar obelisks. The pours mesh gently holds dried flowers, fruit, and other plant material and the shape mimics the movement of the scent as it is released into the atmosphere. Own one of two sizes here.

Just three more days until New Year’s Eve! Do you have big plans?

There’s still time to plan a fun little get-together or to add some glitz and glam to whatever you already have planned. Above you’ll find some inspiring ideas to implement this weekend. Although the Ball Drop Cupcakes may be a tad out of my league, I can totally print out that cute subway art and throw it in a frame by Saturday. (And hey, so can you!)

Are you making anything fun for New Year’s Eve?

So Pinteresting means the items were found on Pinterest first – so here’s each item with their pin and source!

A Peek Inside

12:20 am in decor by Katie

Hello! Today I thought I’d give you a little peek inside my home to check out my holiday decor. It’s kind of a mish-mash – my white tree doesn’t really match the make-shift mantel we created – but that’s ok. Because I really really loveee that white tree. And the rest kind of just happened that way.

Here are some details of the rest:

I have a few more Christmas-y items in the kitchen, but the most is shown here in the living room. I’ve posted the full gallery to Flickr, so you can check out the larger images there if you’d like.

As you can see, I kept it pretty simple this year, but just enough to bring out the holiday cheer. Did you go crazy this year or are your decorations about the same flow as mine?

Matchy-Matchy: Love This Look?

2:38 am in decor by Katie

This morning while going through my Google reader, I saw the first image on Desire to Inspire and then the second not too long after over on Material Girls.

They got me thinking about being all matchy-matchy. I like the monochromatic look, but I’m not sure I like the matching look. Would you agree that they’re two different things? The difference to me is that monochromatic would be an essentially solid red wall with an essentially solid red headboard and a matching look would be the image above – pattern to pattern. I guess it doesn’t really matter in real life, but talking about it here makes it easier!

In the second image, the pattern is repeated in several places. Not only is it the wallpaper, but it’s framed as wall decor, in two different colors as pillows and it’s used in the window treatments.

Do you love the matchy-matchy look? Do you prefer monochromatic or could do without both?

Make the most of your balcony

11:37 pm in Lighting, decor by Shellie

Just because you don’t have a backyard, doesn’t mean that you can’t make the most of your outdoor living space. If you have a balcony, regardless of the size, you can turn it into a tranquil oasis where you will want to spend time. The first thing you need to do is evaluate the space you’re working with and decide what you will most likely do out there. If you think you’ll eat or need a place to write or do crafts, etc., then a small table and chairs would be ideal. On the other hand, if this is just a place you’d like to escape to relax or read a good book, a comfortable chair is probably the most important feature.

  • Furniture – If your balcony is like most, it’s probably not giving you a lot of square footage to work with. A bistro table will fit nicely or if you prefer a comfortable lounge chair, hanging hammock chair or something of this nature and then just add a side table to set your beverage on.
  • Lighting – Most balconies have an outlet outside where you can plug a nice decorative light in. However, if this isn’t an option, there are plenty of solar lights that will soak up the sun’s rays during the day and then provide you with some lighting at night. Some even have motion detectors so they aren’t glowing all night.
  • Rug – That hard concrete probably isn’t too inviting. Fortunately, there are a multitude of gorgeous outdoor rugs in every color, pattern and size for you to choose from.
  • Decor – Many people simply neglect to bring any kind of decor to their balcony for whatever reason. There are outdoor canvases that are treated to stand up against elements, garden statues and wind chimes that will work well in this space. A water feature is always an added bonus to provide a soothing atmosphere and some of these are solar powered as well. Additionally, a small biofuel fireplace is the perfect addition to any outdoor space. They are environmentally-friendly and will provide ambiance and warmth on those cooler evenings. The best thing about these is that they’re portable so you can take them inside when you go in for the evening.
  • Plants – No balcony is complete without plants or flowers. Corner plant stands gives you a place to really stack quite a few containers or you can hang them with hooks from the balcony above you. Most balconies have some type of railing so you can always make use of these and attach planters that are designed for this purpose. You can even grow your own vegetables if you want!

Even a small balcony can become a place to escape! Bring personality to your outdoor space but be sure not to overdo it. Too many items could make it cluttered and then it won’t be nearly as relaxing!

Turning your bathroom into a spa

11:51 pm in Bathroom, decor by Shellie

You don’t have to do an entire remodel on your bathroom to create a spa atmosphere. Adding a few essentials to your decor and hiding the clutter will ensure that you find tranquility whether you’re soaking in the tub or just trying to escape the chaos of a busy home.

Choose a Theme

Spas will rarely have mismatched towels or a confusing theme so you may need to purchase a few new essentials. A natural garden, blue lagoon or Asian theme are just a few ideas to get you started.

Add a Little Nature

Vases with fresh flowers, a hanging fern or some bamboo are all fabulous ways to bring nature into your bathroom. These living things breathe life into your space and promote a calming environment.

Pay Attention to Detail

You don’t have to spend a fortune on decor. Roll a few towels and place them in a basket, add a small table with a tabletop fountain and make sure that you place a few soy candles around the room.

Eliminate Clutter

Spas are simplistic and so should your bathroom be. Instead of having things laying around your sink, tuck them away somewhere. There are simple storage solutions available to accommodate even the smallest bathrooms. Remember, a spa is a peaceful place. If your eyes come to rest on a pile of towels on the floor or an assortment of hair products laying around, the entire aesthetic of the room is compromised.
