Ecotourism in 3s

4:01 pm in Architecture, Green by Troy Turner

Three Stacks is a group of ecotourism structures proposed for ethnic locations throughout the Ukrainian region. Two of the 4 level structures contain sleeping accommodations for guests, and the third is a restaurant. The buildings are composed of wood, cane, clay and grass, and are linked through modern energy-efficient lighting in combination with landscape elements also native to the region.

UNStudio = UNBelievable!

4:02 pm in Architecture by Troy Turner

UNStudio is at it again with this ambitious vertical city concept designed for Singapore’s cultural hub. Scotts Tower attempts to redefine the way architects approach modern high-rise residential architecture by reframing public spaces in an aesthetically provocative way. Whether or not a controversial design such a this gets a green light is another story. We can only hope so!

Neighborhoods in the Sky
The concept of The Scotts Tower is that of a vertical city incorporating a variety of residence types and scales. In addition, outdoor green areas in the form of sky terraces, penthouse roof gardens and individual terraces form an important element of the design. The vertical city concept is interpreted on the tower in three scales; the “city”, the  “neighborhood” and the “home”. The three elements of the vertical city concept along with the green areas are bound together by two gestures: the “vertical frame” and the “sky frames”.
The vertical frame organizes the tower architecturally in an urban manner. The frame affords the tower the vertical city effect by dividing the four residential clusters into different neighborhoods.
The sky frames – at the lobby (Level 1 & Level 2) and sky terrace (Level 25) – organize the amenity spaces and green areas of the tower.

Customised living
The four residential clusters are each designed for versatile and customized living. Individual identity is given to each unit by means of type, scale, distribution and articulation of outdoor space, along with the possibility for personalization of the interior layout; by means of a semi-white plan, residents will be given the freedom to configure their personal living spaces according to their lifestyles and aspirations.
The individual articulation of each cluster within the main framework of the tower is directly related to the organization and materialization of the terrace spaces. These varied outdoor spaces afford a choice of views, with corner terraces providing both cityscape panoramas and vistas over the natural landscape adjacent to the building.

City Loft, City View, Park View and Penthouses
Situated above the lower sky frame, the hundred and twenty-eight City Loft residences in the first cluster occupy the lower sixteen floors of the tower.
The second cluster offers a total of eighty City View units distributed in two clusters. The first cluster shares the first sixteen floor plates with the City Loft residencies. While the second cluster of forty eight units runs above the previous package.
Park View units form the next cluster above the second sky frame, covering five floors and containing twenty units. Crowning the tower is the final cluster containing one floor of three exclusive Penthouse residences.

Gardens, recreation and Sky Frames
The nearby green area to the West of the tower is extended into The Scotts Tower site initially by means of a ground level landscape concept designed by Sitetectonix. This ground level concept incorporates a multi-layered environment which links together the different zones and recreational facilities available to the residents. Recreational facilities within the gardens include a 50 meter lap pool with sunning deck, a children’s pool, a wellness pool, dining & BBQ pavilions, a meeting pavilion and massage and gym pavilions.

Symbiotic Facade

4:03 pm in Architecture by Troy Turner

The team at in square lab noticed that the Historical Pushinsky Cinema is in need of a major facelift- one that will not only reinvigorate the architecture but also one that will revitalize its presence as a focal point of central Moscow. Their corian & glass recladding proposal is seen as a solid cellular structure that grows, at first scarcely from the square onto the steps & then gradually covering parts of the facade, constantly revealing glimpses of the building’s history.

Rather than erasing the existing building, the proposed scheme celebrates the tension and co-existence between the retained and the changed through strategic use of form, light, space and material. Corian is chosen as the facade material in view to achieve a seamless organic fluidity of amalgamation between the rigid (representing the past) and the fluid (indicating a new future).

The merging of this new solid structure into the light transparent glass facade generates a sense of playfulness while inclusive and inviting the public arena. Numerous ‘celluar holes’ within the new intervention also creates transient light qualities that will change throughout the day as the light washes over the surfaces.

Endless Expression of Information

4:02 pm in Architecture by Troy Turner

For 350 years the Unversitylibrary Breman has organized and structured information to make it accessible to visitors. As you can imagine, the library has been witness to the incredible evolution of information sharing from paper to digital. To celebrate, this installation titled Wandern im Wissen (Wandering in Knowledge) serves as a representation of the endless flow of shared thought over the years. Hit the jump to catch a detailed vid of the process!

In the center of the 15 meters high stairway a sculpture of folded paper demonstrates the connection between the traditional storage medium and the digital information world. The permanent flow of information inquiries at the SuUB runs through on a vertical axis between four floors of the building. The random results of the inquiries release corresponding visuals of text and pictures which cause curiosity for the various activites in the library. The media sculpture highlights the abundance of the mental processes, which take place simultaneously in the library. The retrieval inquiries result in new collages of visuals of text and pictures, which form an aesthetic translation of the search procedure. The searched words, then, fill the pool of data at the ground of the stairway. Altogether the media installation poses questions about the function of the information in the age of the increasing communicational isolation. In regard to the title, the visitor literally passes through the world of knowledge.

Park Lover’s Pit-Stop

4:01 pm in Architecture by Troy Turner

Viktoria Tomova’s urban outdoor rest area concept, Be Happy, features a unique mechanical awning system that can be retracted and extended via sunlight sensors or at the push of a button. The clean, minimal form of the U-shaped columns provides ample support for the protective covering while avoiding obtrusion of the view to the surrounding nature. Intelligent spatial decisions and purposefully placed seating also provide a nice balance of both privacy and invitation.

H2O Inspired Gallery

3:02 pm in Architecture, Gallery by Troy Turner

Zaha Hadid Architect and Roca announce the opening of the Roca London Gallery – a design inspired by the power of water as a transforming element to carve a sequence of dynamic, porous spaces for the gallery. Fissures and slices in the walls give permeability consistently throughout the gallery. The design theme of water extends to the facade, which appears as a set of ripples in movement across the exterior.

Super Efficient PreFab

3:01 pm in Architecture, House by Troy Turner

PicsaHouse, the latest from Kassen Lifestyle, is a unique and cost-effective prefab housing solution that looks to relieve some of the problems with current housing systems. Most prefab houses use the same techniques as stud-fram building, leading to the same inherent structural and insulation issues, but the PicsaHouse has adapted techniques from bridge building, making it quick to build while requiring less maintenance over time… exactly how a prefab should be.

Bridge sections, careful waterproofing, carefully placed awnings, and reinforced concrete maximize insulatory capacity while making the house durable and diminishing heating and cooling costs. The stackable bridge sections also make it possible to expand a single level home to two-stories simply by adding a stairwell unit to the lower portion and a modular section on top.

Super Sleek Stadium

3:01 pm in Architecture by Troy Turner

This ultra-modern proposal for an urban stadium looks like something outta this world! Radiant curves, sleek lines, and the structure’s material combination of stainless steel, carbon fiber, and concrete create a remarkable contrast to the stadium’s placement in a natural coastal setting. Situated just outside Seoul, the venue would host year-round sports and events for local communities. A bit alien, but I’m liking it!

Innovative Observation Tower

3:01 pm in Architecture by Troy Turner

The result of a study into the application of Ultra High Performance Concrete, this 25 meter high observation tower by UNStudio really puts the material to the test. The innovative concrete differs from the norm in that it is extremely dense, has steel fibers, and maintains a fine grain structure. Its use in the tower makes it possible to achieve the fluid, eye-catching shape with minimal obstruction of the views.

The design for the observation tower guides visitors in a fluid ascent up the 134 steps to the highest viewing point. Visitors are lead via the first set of steps to the lower viewing platform which stands at a height of 10 metres. Following this, the second set of steps provides a turn in direction, allowing for an alternative view of the surrounding forested pastures. These steps lead visitors through the tree tops to the second viewing platform which stands at a height of 20 metres and offers views over the nature reserve around the city of Groningen. The highest viewing platform, at a height of 24 metres, is reached via the final set of steps and offers visitors a wide open vista of ‘De Onlanden’ nature reserve.
