Rue Magazine: Anniversary Issue

Have you seen the latest issue of Rue Magazine? It’s their Anniversary Issue and man, is it full of beautiful spaces.

My favorite is the office of Chronicle Books in San Francisco. Can you imagine having meetings on the lovely table? Underneath that gigorge light? (that means ginormously gorgeous, if you wondering.)  Oh, and that circular carpet brings the perfect pop of color. And I don’t even like red.

Forget the office – I want my kitchen to look like this!

What was your favorite part of the Rue Anniversary Issue?

Make Your Own Febreze

10:34 pm in 未分类 by Lyn

If you’re as addicted to Pinterest as I am, it’s quite likely that you saw this Fake Febreze pin. If you did, have you tried it?

I did! And I love it. The “recipe” on Fake It Frugal calls for:

  • 1/8 cup of Fabric Softener
  • 2 Tablespoons of Baking Soda
  • Water (To fill a 32 oz bottle)

Last week, when my bottle had reached its last spritz, I immediately thought of this DIY concoction.

Rather than getting out my computer for the exact measurements, I simply filled the cap of my fabric softener to about 1/3 full and dumped it into the 32 oz empty Febreze bottle. Next, I added a spoonful of baking soda and filled the bottle with warm water. After a good shake, I tested it on a pair of jeans because I was worried that maybe I had put too much fabric softener, but it was great. I recommend testing yours as well – so you don’t have soapy sofas and chairs.

Heather of Fake It Frugal had said that this is actually better than Febreze, and I have to agree! The freshness is definitely stronger and longer lasting. And definitely more affordable – those bottles of Febreze are really getting pricey. What do you think? Would you make your own Febreze or stick to the real thing?

Dining Etiquette

I found this Dining Etiquette 101 image on Pinterest today and it got me thinking about the way I dine – and the way people I typically dine with dine. I definitely don’t follow all of these rules – do you?

I certainly don’t use my fork as a pusher when eating dessert. Nor do I tear my pieces of bread up into small pieces and butter them one by one – I dip the whole piece in some olive oil and scarf it down!

On the flip side, these are definitely good things to know. I like the way you’re supposed to eat soup – that’s very proper. The complete place setting is also appreciated, because I’m not always good with that. Just remember – fork and left have four letters, knife, spoon and right have five letters.

What do you think about Dining Etiquette 101? Do you or those you dine with need a crash course??

So Pinteresting: Innovative Home Ideas

How fun and interesting are these images found on Pinterest this week?

First of all, I would love having a cutting board over the trash can – wouldn’t you? It would make life so much easier. It also makes it easier to transfer whatever you’re chopping to a bowl or plate. The ideal situation would be just a cutting board slab that pulled out, rather that taking up the entire drawer space!

How about the stenciled ceiling? I love the bronze color of it in contrast with the dark walls – very elegant. I can’t imagine that that was a fun painting job – but the effect and elegance it brings to the bathroom is definitely worth it!

Finally, I’ve never seen an outdoor area quite this seating area in the middle of the pool. Have you? If it were mine, I’d extend the back a little and put stools for those that want to float in the pool while eating and drinking.

Which of these innovative ideas would you want for your home??

It’s prime apple picking season so I’m on the hunt for some different recipes to incorporate all of those apples we brought home. And since I’ve already made the standard apple pie, I thought it might be fun to mix in some savory apple recipes with the sweet ones and fly through those apples before they go bad. Thus, these recipes to keep on your radar all involve delicious apples!

Did you go apple picking already this season – or do you have plans to do so? What  recipes do you like to make with apples?

Here are the recipes shown above, from left to right:

Apple Pie Apple / No Sugar Added Apple Butter / Apple, Bacon and Onion Pizza / Baked Apples / Caramel Apple Cupcakes / Apple & Onion Chicken / Apple Brie Quesadilla

No matter what your plans, be sure to squeeze in some time to enjoy the weekly 6:

  1. Instead of Google Earth-ing your home on the computer, get yourself a Google Earth rug like the one shown above.
  2. Wouldn’t it be fun to serve warm soups and chilis in these funky bowls supported by feet?
  3. Try a new recipe such as these seasonal pumpkin whoopie pies
  4. Or add some sparkle to a dessert with gold edible glitter.
  5. Create your own statement wall art with a canvas, shoe polish and your favorite poem.
  6. Dream about relaxing as a queen on a beautiful modern throne.

Scrabble Letters: Love this Look?

It seems like Scrabble letters are making their way into people’s home decor more and more. From Pinterest to various blogs, I’ve seen so many different uses of Scrabble letters, it’s amazing! I wonder if the yellow letters from Words with Friends will ever make their way into the mix!

What are your thoughts on using Scrabble letters within your home decor? The pillows I would do, maybe even as initials, but I don’t know if I could dedicate a whole wall to them in fear that I would tire looking at them rather quickly. I love Scrabble, don’t get me wrong – but I’m just not sure how much.

That being said, I do like the random assortment of letters over the sofa and words spelled out – I especially like the way they wrap around the corner – just not for my own home. How about those letters over the sofa? They really look like they were stolen out of the box!

Would you or have you implemented Scrabble letters into your decor? Do share!

DIY to Try: Ceiling Medallion Wall Art

Here’s a DIY that anyone can try. Sometimes I see awesome DIYs and lose faith three sentences in because I know I’ll somehow mess it up. But this DIY, I know I can handle! All you have to do is find a ceiling medallion or two – or ten – that you like, throw some paint on and hang those babies up!

You could also just leave them white, if that’s what you prefer. But I’m leaning towards different shades of one color. I also prefer the medallions that are solid in the center, as opposed to the those with holes in the center. But you could always fill those with molding or a mirror or even a photo if you need something in the center.

My bedroom is in need of some wall decor, so I think I’ll be tackling this easy DIY sometime in the near future. What about you? Where would you implement this DIY?

Mantels: Would You Rather?

If you had one mantel to do whatever you wanted with it, would you rather a mantel re-purposed as a bookcase?

via Apartment Therapy

Or would you rather this mantel re-purposed as a headboard?

via HGTV

Or how about this plain ol’ modern mantel?

I like the idea of a mantelheadboard, especially since the shelf it provides gives a fun place to decorate in a way that typically doesn’t occur in the bedroom.

What do you think about re-purposing mantels – a good idea or leave them as they are?

Etsy Roundup: Giclee Prints

1:19 am in 未分类 by Lyn

There are so many art-related items on Etsy. SO many. Inspired by a gallery wall of art, I had to narrow it down to Giclee prints for this round up or else I would have been on Etsy all week. From the nine images above, you can tell there’s a great, diverse collection. For those of you wondering what the heck giclee is, it’s a printing process that uses archival inks. It is often used in museums and by artists duplicating paintings or other textural work.

Even though I like the all-giclee gallery above, I think I would branch out a little in my own home.  Adding different textures to the wall, such as paintings or shadow boxes would bring in some texture. As would a mirror, as seen in the gallery wall below.
