Get Every Last Boba

Boba, bubble, pearl – whatever you call those squishy tapioca balls, they’re delicious. They’re also slippery and if you’re not skilled with fishing those little gems out with a straw, a redesigned cup might make it easier. It’s really simple. The bottom is indented inwards to create a ring – a moat of boba balls if you will. Love it!

Radiation Warning From a Bracelet

There are stacks of documented studies on the effects of radiation on pregnant women. The most detrimental being the inability of the embryonic cell to properly divide and split. CARE is a bracelet designed to alert women of radiation levels in the immediate vicinity. The bracelet changes color and vibrates when levels are high enough to potentially harm the growing fetus.

Sway

Sway is a modern rocking chair designed by Markus Krauss.

Supported by a steel frame, Sway has a padded, upholstered seat. It can rock as you please, or be locked into a stationary position.

Sway can be used with one person, or two, in many different ways.

Designer Markus Krauss is based out of Germany.

The Power Play Continues

This is so simple. Continuance is a set of batteries with a USB interface on the side. The batteries are rechargeable plus dole out some juice to stranded gadgets that are starved of power. Handy, compact and a totally do-able concept! Kudos!

A Circular Wonder Kitchen

Live in a cramped apartment? Short on space but still want a fully equipped and functional kitchen? Sounds impossible until you see what the Soria is all about! A circular configuration with an expandable table, cooking hub, sink, concealed storage and cabinets! These are features that make kitchen-buffs like me super happy!

Pandora-ish

Imagine a waste bin (you heard me). Take that bin and fill it with compostable products like grass cuttings, tea bags, & cardboard (just do it). Now attach your new plant-worthy cell to the facade of an ugly building with thousands of other composting bins (don’t forget the plant).  You’re all finished! Now watch it grow, reduce CO2, collect rainfall for reuse, and transform your least favorite eyesores into a recycled, green, and overall cool looking structure. Now wasn’t that easy?

This, in essence, is what designer Stanislaw Mlynski was imagining when he designed the award winning Re-cell ecological wall. A big undertaking, maybe, but this design shows that there is relevant potential for similar modular systems in eco-cities of the future.

Volt + Attitude = Voltitude

According to Voltitude founders, Eric and André-Marcel Collombin, the time has come that we change our attitudes toward urban mobility because electric technology is now mature enough to enable us to do it. I couldn’t have said it better myself. First presented at this years Geneva Motor Show, this ultra-light bicycle-scooter hybrid boats a powerful electric motor, and has one of the most simple and effective folds I’ve seen.  Kinda looks like a familiar army knife huh?! What can I say? They know what they’re doing.

Efflorescent Lighting

The Ilumi candle holder by Jenggala in-house designer, Fitorio Leksono, brings to life Jenggala’s best selling frangipani flower motif with majestic movements in the form of shadow puppets cast through it’s white dome. The ball shape of the holder is the union of a stoneware base glazed in stone black, and a translucent porcelain cover glazed in satin white. In the dark, Ilumi’s glowing shadows and unique details will bring nuance and warmth to your room.

YD & red dot award: design concept Partner Up!

red dot design award is a very prestigious design competition and a great resource base for conceptual design. Winning the competition catapults you to instant fame and recognition amongst your peers and the design community. red dot usually has certain benchmarks for submission and registration is one of them. We are now at the regular registration phase and here is an opportunity for you to get a complete fee waiver for pre-judging entries only. We will give you all the details on the 7th of April 2011, between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. PST on how to enter this competition. For now all you need to do is decide on which category you want to enter. No immediate design submissions required. Just look out for the Free Registration window that will open up on the April 7th.

What does your mailbox say about you?

Surely you have heard that you never get a second chance to make a first impression so why would you allow an old, generic, rusty mailbox the opportunity to create a boring one for you and your home? It is surprising just how many houses you can pass while driving or out walking that display a dynamic exterior and stunning landscaping yet their mailbox is simply shameful.

Many people seem to just overlook this minor detail which is rather unfortunate because it’s your welcoming mat to your property. Even if you have a mailbox attached to your home and you have an actual postal carrier who walks through heat, rain and snow to deliver your mail, doesn’t your home deserve a piece of modern art that demands attention on the outside? You might even give your mail deliver person something to smile about everyday. It’s the small, subtle pieces like these that make your home memorable, stand out above the rest and even more attractive than it already is.

Contemporary mailboxes come in quite a large assortment of designs, materials and colors so no matter what your home looks like on the outside, you are guaranteed to find one that will compliment it!

Paper Wall Clock

Amarillo2 is a handcrafted cardboard and paper wall clock, built beautifully with love and passion. The clock’s colorful hands break up the concentric rings and angles that look almost hypnotic. Don’t stare too hard. I also love the pizza-box packaging!

Home Farming Can Look So Trendy!

You can mistake Éva as a modern decorative piece for restaurants, but it’s a trendy, hi-tech composter. It blends in beautifully with any interior and does a magnificent job of recycling wasted organic matter. A part of the waste is used for cultivating and maintaining a green patch and the rest is used to produce methane. I love the way it integrates and becomes a self-contained biosphere!

Stunning Views and Foodie Experiences

The Cube by Electrolux will offer guests wonderful, exclusive food experiences. Guests enjoy the evening and interact and learn from the professionals chefs at work on Electrolux appliances. By sharing professional shortcuts, Electrolux wants to show people it doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive to create great experiences as long as you have the right tools.

Two Electrolux Cube’s will travel across Europe offering a memorable dining experience for 18 guests per setting in magnificent locations. The transparent and semi-transparent structures will be seen atop of monuments, buildings and even water platforms in Belgium, Italy, Russia, Switzerland and Sweden
but only for three months at each location.

The Cube by Electrolux will feature a different hand-picked resident chef at each venue and will offer tailor made recipes using locally sourced ingredients and all prepared on state-of-the-art Electrolux appliances. When guests first arrive, the 140sqm space will be open for entertaining and some great sight seeing, especially from the external platform. When dinner is served the concealed dining table will drop from the ceiling so as to sit the 18 guests before being raised again for after dinner drinks and mingling.

The kitchen will be on display within the centre of each Electrolux Cube with chefs working on show to share their skills. The chef will form an integral part of the event and provide an atmosphere more akin to cooking with friends than attending a traditional restaurant. Ambience will be controlled by the latest systems to ensure the most appropriate moods for each dining occasion.

Additionally, a series of special events will be offered to guests that marry fashion, music and taste. The tailored events will change in each venue to further enhance the special experience offered within the Cube.

Chair Inside A Chair

I’m not so keen on the Pull & Pushi’s design but the idea that a chair can be pulled out of smaller chair to give you a wider chair and side table is intriguing. It’s a great space saving idea and continues to explore compact furniture with multiple functions and dare I say, personalities?

Lucky Love Chair

The Lucky Love Chair is a beautiful modern chair made from Dutch craftsmanship. Using bent and steamed plywood, designer Maarten Baptist created a unique, layered design.

The website says “The Lucky Love Chair…is trying to give you a good feeling on the first sight and tries to hug you.”

It is supported by a thin, black metal frame.

The Lucky Love Chair is manufactured in the Netherlands and available through JOINE – Office for Design.

A Bench with 5,000 Stories

I love anything with familiar fragments, which is why I love the Metrobench. Recycled from 5,000 NYC Metro cards, this intelligent design transforms a symbol of movement and speed into an object of rest and reflection. With help from Craigslist, designer Stephen Shaheen amassed all 5,000 cards, each with their own little untold story, in under a week. The sculpture was then assembled completely by hand, card by card. Expect more from this thought-provoking designer.

Reptilian Roadster

Long is right, vehicles are getting more and more lifelike! Check out the crocodilian face from the front view of the Reptile and you’ll see what I mean. This race car crosses over to the streets with it’s hybrid 4-pole electric induction/27000CC Wankel engine that develops more than 700HP at 9000 RPMs. Rawr.

The ottoman – an essential component for a contemporary room

Nothing ruins the aesthetic of a contemporary room faster than clutter. Therefore, it is safe to say that the key to a minimalistic modern living space is stylish storage solutions that will give everything a proper home. One of the best ways to tuck things away is by using a storage ottoman.

Versatility

Not only can you store blankets, games, magazines, dog toys and remote controls in these versatile pieces of furniture, they’re actually really functional. Obviously, you can use them to put your feet up as they were designed for but they also double as fun chairs when your guest list exceeds your seating capacity. If that’s not enough, place a tray on top of one and use it as a decorative end table. That’s a lot of uses from one simple piece of furniture.

Design

Ottomans come in various shapes, sizes, colors and fabric selections so really, whatever you are looking for, you are sure to find it. They can be subtle and blend in with the rest of your decor or use them as your opportunity to add a splash of color in your room. What could possibly be better in an all black or white room than a lime green, hot pink or turquoise blue ottoman to add a little fun?
