Remodeling in Chicago Photos – A Space Reinvented

Remodeling in Chicago is quite common for families wishing to update an urban space due to the age of many properties in town. These photos show an apartment located in the old Montgomery Ward headquarters. This property has great views of the John Hancock Center and the surrounding skyline. The apartment is an L-shape allowing for many unique spaces to be created. The owner’s wishes were to create a living space for the family and a public art gallery all in one space. As an owner of an art gallery it makes sense to make the home inviting to VIP clients that need a more intimate setting than the art gallery alone. The architects on the project were Wheeler Kearns. More of their work can be found here.

Viaduct

viaduct-table

Inspired by driving though Holland, the Viaduct Table has a shape based on the architecture with the same name.  This gives it both character and a cool look, but also adds a convenient new feature to the table.  Its shape naturally adds a small storage space, and you know that storage space is something you can never have too much of!

Designer Spotlight: Marc Th. vander Voorn

An independent designer, Marc Th. vander Voorn uses his prestigious Minerva Art Academy education to produce lighting fixtures that are playful and sophisticated at the same time. The Moon Light, top, and Starling Lamp, bottom, are examples of his approach to lighting: simple, but always incorporating a unique element. The Moon Light is particularly innovative, as it features translucent patterns that dance through the white circular shade. His pieces would look stunning in a living room, office space, or reception area that needs a little boost of modern fashion that is subtle, classy, and eye-catching.

A Minimal Sofa for the Decorating Purist

If you are a minimal decorating purist, than the “Max” sofa here from Flexform is worth consideration. They have nicely adapted the concepts of minimalism in the thin seating cushions, narrow sofa legs and smaller backrest. By not “overdoing” the furniture stuffing like many products on the market today, they allow minimal design fans a chance for living room perfection. Obviously, if black and white is your color scheme that is a bonus too. More information: here. Via.

NomadHome: Not Your Uncle’s Mobile Home

When you think of a mobile home, what comes to mind? Likely, you think of a home in a trailer park that might be single or double-wide trailer. Architect Gerold Peham challenges that predisposition through his project called “NomadHome”. This is a modern modular housing product that is designed for people who move around. The prefab housing is built in Austria and can be transported by truck to its final destination. Construction can be finalized in 2-3 days once at the job site. Now the amazing thing to me is how awesome this mobile home is. The amenities inside look like what you would find inside a beautiful house. You can learn more about NomadHome: HERE.

Designer Spotlight: Torsten Neeland

Torsten Neeland has nearly 20 years experience in industrial and interior design, but don’t let that fool you – his designs are as fresh and innovative as if he were a recent graduate. Moving from Hamburg to London, he brings a European flair to all that he does. The simple, urban designs that permeate his furniture belie a complex process: Neeland believes that it takes planning, insight, and time to produce something that is deceptively simple on the outside. The above two pieces are a coffee table and a gallery light respectively, and both exhibit the signature minimalism and simplicity of Neeland’s finished products.
